City dispatcher C M Ralph released Myrtle Point 1967 weather figures. Rainfall totaled 47.62 inches, with a long dry spell from June to September and 81 days without rain. High river readings occurred January and December, while the year averaged 54 degrees with a 65 degree high and 42 degree low.
Local log truck drivers Gayle Bush Sr and John Kennedy pressed the city council over late night noise by area juveniles and rights to warm up trucks at breakfast. Chief Hathaway noted weekly juvenile citations for speeding and noise. The council also approved a water and sewer rate study and noted a $14,900 Maryland Avenue sewer project estimate. A fleet diesel fire truck purchase of 21 500 with 2 000 discount was discussed.
Seaman Apprentice W. Savage, USN, son of Mrs. Samuel J. Jones of Powers Road Broadbent Ore, serves aboard the Seventh Fleet carrier USS Kitty Hawk off North Vietnam. The carrier's mission includes launching aircraft to strike enemy supply and communication lines and support US and Allied ground operations in South Vietnam.
Local students from Myrtle Point and Powers named among Oregon campus achievers as 702 fall term students posted GPAs of 3.5 or above. Anne Renee Guern of Myrtle Point and Henry Jowin Elfer of Powers are listed among the honorees depending on the source entry.
Scoutmaster Dale Woods with troop 145 will collect Christmas trees this Saturday January 6. Residents should leave trees in their front yard for removal and donations to the troop for this service are appreciated.
Marine Private Dennis L. Freer and Marine Private First Class Donald G. Edlund of Myrtle Point Ore. completed two weeks of field training at the Marine Corps base in Maine. They learned day and night patrolling infantry weapons survival methods and assault tactics taught by experienced NCOs to become part of the air ground combat team. They practiced map reading land navigation mine disarmament and safety with live machine gun exposure before advancing to further training and permanent unit assignment.
Approximately 400 dollars missing from the Myrtle Point High School safe after a break in between midnight Friday and Saturday. Entry used a jemmy to open doors and a torch to cut dials. Police continue to investigate the theft and urge paying exact amounts. A separate Dora store robbery attempt ended with the suspect returning the money after an initial threat.
Perry received a warning for a stop sign violation. John Lo McCaffree and Florence Powner were fined $1500 and $25 respectively for traffic infractions. Joseph Frazer faced a basic mule violation with a $25 fine.
Donna L. Anderson of Powers and Donald L. Mast of Myrtle Point were named to the Oregon College of Education fall honor roll in Monmouth. Anderson, a senior in elementary education, and Mast, a junior in secondary education, joined 186 students with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
The Myrtle Point Rotary Club directors vote to raise 850 for the Belloni Boys Ranch shop building. Kenneth Laird donates 100 and Wayne Babcock pledges 25. Plans to raise the remaining balance will be outlined at the January 4 meeting.
Record enrollment totals show over 55 million students in the last school year with 35.6 million in elementary grades and 18.4 million in high school. College enrollment near 8.6 million could rise to 9.1 million by 1975, per Metropolitan Life.
Postmaster Milton Schroeder reminds mailers that new higher postage rates take effect January 7. Six-cent first class letters, ten cents per ounce air mail, five cents per postal card, and eight cents per air postal card.
