On Tuesday March 5 District 41 schools will dismiss early. Elementary teachers will attend a music presentation by Dr. Dyrude formerly Medford music supervisor. Grades 7 12 teachers will meet at the high school to discuss curriculum directions and development.
Obituary notice for Benjamin Ervin Wood 63 died in Myrtle Point February 18. Services held February 23 at Myrtle Point Chapel officiated by Rev Allen Tow. Interment at Catching Creek Cemetery. Survived by wife Ruth M. and daughters Mary E. Johnson and Nancy K. Nunn, sisters Margaret Whitney Winifred Gray Bernice Duerksen, one grandchild Lana Bosco. Born April 28, 1904 in Roberts County South Dakota.
Pacific Power and Light repeats its annual safety warning about kite flying near electric power lines as spring arrives. Brisk winds attract flyers but risk electrocution and power outages, prompting reminders of safety rules and distances from lines.
Coos County Treasurer Ed Stevenson reports 1966 67 investments earned 192 97228 in interest a county high. Treasurer notes grants went to County 113 54343 and School Districts 77 09148 while Sanitary and Fire Districts received 2 33237. He attributes gains to higher rates and tighter fund management.
Myrtle Point police investigate a breaking and entering at Spruce School on Friday night. Thieves took miscellaneous items and some change. A radio was stolen and entered through a door. a window was broken.
A Myrtle Point man Army Sp/4 Alfred Edgar Plaep Jr. 19 was killed in action February 23 in Vietnam. Army officials confirmed the death and notified his parents Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Edgar Plaep Sr. of Arago.
Airman Miles W Davis son of Mrs Juanita S Jordan of Powers completed basic training at Lackland AFB Texas. He is assigned as a photographer with a Strategic Air Command unit at Offutt AFB Nebraska. Davis is a 1967 Powers High School graduate. Sp4 Plaep born April 7, 1948. He attended Myrtle Point High School and joined the Army last year and wrestled in MPHS.
Oregon 1968 AAUW offers two scholarships for women pursuing degrees online. Applicants must be Oregon students in good standing and nearing degree completion. Submit forms and transcripts by April 15 1968 to SWOCC Counseling Office Dallwood Hall.
Tickets for the State A-2 Basketball Tournament are on sale at Myrtle Point High School. Price is 8 700 per person. The event runs March 11 12 and 13 at Marshfield High School Gym.
Graveside services for Mrs Gretchen Grace King of Sitkum Rt will be held Friday March 1 at 300 pm at the Norway Cemetery. Myrtle Point Chapel 18 in charge of the service. Mrs King was the wife of William Dewey King.
Two weekend accidents were logged by Myrtle Point police. A 1958 Universal Jeep driven by Cleland Wilkinson struck a northbound 1967 Dodge Dart near Dees Grocery after brake failure, causing minor damage and no injuries. A second collision on Spruce Street involved John Rayevich reaching for his child, causing minor damage and a serious injury to Rayevich.
State Rep Rod McKenzie announced he will seek another term on the Republican ticket. If elected in November he will serve a third term after first being elected in 1953. He sits on the highway committee and its tourism subcommittee, plus financial affairs and natural resources. In the last election McKenzie defeated Democrat Carl Back of Port Orford.
County treasurer Ross Pinkley reports 1968 hosom drive at Myrtle Point raised 2837.41 with 870.06 from Myrtle Point High School student body. Rent of the money came from mailers and a coin collective effort. Ty aka Sonecheee is noted in the reports.
Mrs. Robert Powrie and Mrs. Ben Nichols stated this week that the Heart Fund Drive in Myrtle Point was very successful. They thanked volunteers including Illma Lehmanowaky Anna Michel Mary Bartlett Brenda Down Janet Nichols Edna Fransen Linda Moore Flossie Pontie Nancy King Louise Wylie Jeannie Ball June Train and local Boy Scouts. They credited captains Marge Myers Earth Raockleff and Fiossie Powrie and Rainbow Girls for support. Proceeds support research and heart valve discovery benefiting thousands globally.
The Southwestern Oregon Community College budget committee approved a 1968-69 budget with an $844,500 tax levy, up 11 percent from the previous year. President Jack E. Brookins notes the levy is higher than last year’s voter-approved amount due to operating receipts and prior reductions. The general fund would rise to $2,219,793, an increase of $388,746, pending board of Education approval.
