Laird Named Head of Coos Soil and Water District

Ivan Laird of Sitkum elected chairman of the Coos Soil and Water Conservation District at a Coquille meeting. A longtime district supervisor since 1962, he will lead officers Robert Rooke LA Willett Fred Hagelstein Clifford Lortie and J E Eric Ericksen. The board discussed water control and storage projects near Myrtle Creek Johnson Creek and Prosper to aid cranberry growers. Arthur Lewis Train son of Russell Miller Train Myrtle Point enlisted in the Navy Sea Bees as Equipment Operator Third Class on February 20 1968. he attends a 5 week indoctrination at Gulfport MS then 14 days leave before next duty. He is a 1962 Myrtle Point High School graduate.

Fair Board approves leadership changes and events in Coquille

The Fair Board accepted Harold Clarne’s resignation as fair manager after 16 years and named George Jenkins as successor. Jenkins, a former County Agent, is now Master of Pomona Grange. The board also raised adult admission to 75 cents and signed Christensen Brothers for rodeo shows. Plans include motorcycle races and a teenage band competition on the midway.

Frederick Lange Services Held

Services for Frederick Herman Lange 46 were held March 5 at Unger Funeral Home Reedsport. Graveside rites at Norway Cemetery Myrtle Point followed. Lange died Friday in a logging accident in Ash Valley where he had lived for years. He was born Myrtle Point June 24 1921 and is survived by widow Cleone a son Frederick and daughters Anla Sherry Connie Corrie and Laura plus sisters Mrs Olga Royer and Mrs John Bretzel.

Barklow Won’t Run for Coos County Commissioner

Walter Barklow, Coos County Commissioner since 1965, says he will not seek re election. He served four years after a 1959 election and in 1965 was appointed to replace Bob Geaney, later winning the remainder of Geaney’s term. Ervin R. Wilberger of Myrtle Point has filed to run to fill the vacancy.

District 41 School Board meeting at Dora examines contracts

The District 41 board met at Dora on Feb. 28. Resignations of Donald Forbes and Walter Carlson were accepted. Three year contracts were approved for Edgar Bowen Dora Stanley Knight Broadbent Powell Lancaster Olga Royer Maple Primary and Philip Schermerhorn. Arago Paul Franzen Myrtle Crest and William Richardson high school principal received new three year deals.

Myrtle Point Soldier Alfred Plaep Jr Killed in Vietnam

Alfred Plaep Jr., 19, of Myrtle Point was killed in Vietnam on February 23. He was born April 7, 1948, and attended Myrtle Point High School where he joined the wrestling team. He served at Fort Ord and Fort Polk and had been in Vietnam since August 1967. Survived by parents and several siblings, with funeral services pending at Coos Mortuaries.

Council discusses telephone franchise renewal at meeting

The General Telephone Company presented a 29 year franchise proposal to the City Council. It raises city receipts to about 1500 annually from 1100 and 3 percent of local gross receipts. The council tabled action for study and discussed traffic light funding and a street improvement district in the Bothwick area.

Girl Scout Week Celebrates 66th Anniversary Theme

March 10 to 16 marks the 66th Girl Scout anniversary with the theme Values to Hold World to Explore. Since 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA has grown to 3 percent million members and 40 million adults, with local Western Rivers Council totals. The Norway Cemetery Association annual meeting is set for March 12 at 8:00 p.m. at Bretherson Church. officers will be elected.
