Dement seeks Senate nomination amid Coos County ties and civic roles

Sam Remets circulates nominating petitions for a Senate run chaired by Tom O Dwyer, with Damian Dement named as a potential candidate. Dement, longtime Coos County rancher and OSU athlete, holds numerous local posts including Coos County Livestock, SWOCC budget, and county fair boards, and served as a WWII captain before returning to Myrtle Point with a family and farm at Eckley.

Firemen Schedule Open House at Myrtle Point Fire Hall

The Myrtle Point Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house at the fire hall this Saturday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm to show the newly purchased fire truck. Chairmen are Elvin Murray, assistant fire chief, and Frank Barrows.

City approves east Maryland Avenue sewer project

No remonstrances were made against the sewer project at the Monday city council meeting. City manager Ben Vichols was instructed to prepare detailed plans and specifications for construction this summer. In other business a request from the Myrtle Sportsmens Club was read.

Budget Ready For Vote By School District 4 Budget

After three nights of meetings the budget committee of school district 4 approved a budget of 1 319 923.33 to be voted on April 1. The tax levy to balance the budget is 690 424, an increase of 37 978 over last year. Polls open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm under state law.

Baughman Wins Bid for Broadbent Bridge Construction

County official Walter Barklow announced Baughman and Sons Inc of Coos Bay won the bid to build a 292 foot concrete Broadbent Bridge across the south fork of the Coquille River about six miles south of Myrtle Point. Construction is set Feb 26 to Oct 20, weather permitting, after removing the remains of last May’s destroyed bridge and a prior fatal truck accident.

City Court Fines Three Defendants in Disorderly and Traffic Cases

Rex McCord failed to yield right of way and forfeited 815.00 in fines. Peter Todd faced a 85.00 fine for a defective muffler and counted warming. Kenneth Johnson allowed a dog to run at large and faced a 85.00 fine. Perry Fields was fined 25.00 for disorderly conduct and given 10 days in jail.
