Episcopalians Plan Lent Meditations Across Deanery

The Episcopal Church will host a series of lent meditations across the southwest Deanery. The Myrtle Point service on March 6 at 7 p.m. will feature Rev. Father Peter Dally on The Holy Catholic Church. March 13 at 8 p.m. features Rev. Leslie Dunton on The Sacrament of Penance and Forgiveness of Sins. March 20 at 8 p.m. Rev. Bruce Spencer will address The Resurrection of the Body and Life Everlasting. Everyone is invited.

Old-Time Shriners Honored at Tioga Hotel Banquet

The Coos-Curry Shrine club hosted a banquet in the Tioga hotel Coos Bay honoring old-timers. Attendees from Myrtle Point included Lou Pearce Ernest Clausen Hardie Mast and Russ Papineau. Lou Pearce received special honors for being the oldest Shriner present and his 50 year Masonic pin.

West Coast Telephone Plans Major Improvements in Myrtle Point

Myrtle Point will gain one additional switchboard position and two new long distance circuits to Coos Bay as part of a 1957 budget. George McBride of Coos Bay said the project costs are 2790 and 2960 dollars respectively, with completion expected in the summer. The Myrtle Point exchange shares in a district wide 1957 budget totaling 446000 for routine plant and building work. West Coast Telephone initiates a 9 million construction program across its three state system, including one million for Coos Bay district.

Free Salk Polio Shots Offered by Coos-Curry Medical Society

The Coos Curry Medical Society will offer free Salk polio vaccines to children ages 1 to 19 and to pregnant women. Clinics will run at Myrtle Point and Marehoo schools on March 11 12 and March 13 April 10 with sessions 9 30 to 11 am. Parents are urged to have children vaccinated and pregnant women advised to attend.

Vienna Boys Choir to Perform in Coquille Concert

The Vienna Boys Choir will sing at the Coquille Community Building Wednesday March 6 at 815 pm as the final concert of the season. directed by Xaver Meyer the 22 member group travels across 70 cities this year under Impresario Huro. Admission is by membership card. a dedication ceremony will follow on the sidewalk in front of the post office with speakers including Postmaster Milton Schroeder Mayor Robert Belloni and others. Refreshments will be served after the event.

Extensive Coal Field Work Planned at Eden Ridge

PP and L reports ongoing mapping and initial sampling of two coal seams at Eden Ridge in Coos County. Spring access will expand exploration on the north side. A tunnel into the Crater seam was driven 50 feet for samples, with labs set to analyze results.

Fair Board Signs Harley Tucker Rodeo Contract for 57 Fair

The Coos County Fair Board hired the Harley Tucker Rodeo Co to provide three performances at the 1957 fair, replacing the Max Barbour show due to lower quality. The rodeo runs Friday to Sunday August 16 18 and the Grange Talent Show moves to Thursday evening with two other acts announced later. The Harley Tucker troupe will join the fair parade Saturday morning.

Myrtle Point High reports 53 students on the honor rolls for the second nine weeks. Nine earned First Honor Roll with straight A grades. Second Honor Roll includes 43 students with all A and B grades and others receiving mostly A’s.

Four Explosions Wreck Dora School Furnace

Four blasts wrecked the Dora school furnace about 4 am Friday. Little building damage occurred. the furnace was insured. Mr and Mrs Harvey Osbon who live nearby heard the explosions while business visitor T S Easton reported the incident in Myrtle Point.

Textron Cuts to Four Day Week Amid Weak Market

Textron Inc division Coquille Plywood led by Geo Ablett announced curtailment of production and a four day week at its Coquille Band on Norway plants until demand improves. They cited tight money, reduced housing starts, and prices below manufacturing costs as causes, with plans to resume full capacity when profitable.
