The Norply Veneer Corporation of Norway Oregon takes over the green veneer operation of the Myrtle Point Veneer Co and formerly Coquill Plywood Inc. The firm plans to sell veneer to plywood plants in the Willamette Valley. Don Driscoll continues as supervisor. About 60 workers remain on a continuous two shift schedule.
District Manager George McBride announced West Coast Tel Co will invest 1 300 000 in 1958 for new construction. The plan includes a 500 000 microwave radio link between Coos Bay and Crescent City with roads and power lines to five repeater sites and metal huts with dish antennas. The project aims to bridge gaps in land line resilience amid winds storms floods and slides. Continued on back page.
The Myrtle Point Jaycees stage a bike road-e-o on Saturday March 1 at 10:00 a.m. on 6th Street judged by Mayor Elden Brodie Chief Bill Tankersley and Ray Getchell. Riders must pass safety checks and obtain scotch-lite rear fender tape before entering Group I for under 11 and Group II for older riders.
The Highway Interim Committee will meet in Coquille on March 19 and hold hearings in Road Divisions 1 2 and 3 during the week of March 17 to 21. Eleven hearings are planned across eleven cities to discuss property acquisitions for highway and park use and access control, as well as highway and bridge construction topics.
A large Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club family social at the club house on Feb 22 drew over 100 attendees. The event featured games, entertainment, prizes, and late refreshments, with the scattershooters posting strong scores under lights. The next event is the Crab Feed co-sponsored by Coquille Valley Boat Club on March 9 from noon to 7 p.m.
An automobile driven by Jack Steele of Coquille overturned on Highway 42 last Thursday about 11 30 near the Sargenta Sons mill. Passengers Cora Pawlorocz of Bridge and Barbara Olson of Coquille sustained minor injuries including a fractured ankle and bruises. The car was badly damaged and occupants were taken to McAuley hospital in Coos Bay by Schroeder ambulance.
