Helicopter logging starts in Powers District Kelly Creek sale

The Powers Ranger District of the Siskiyou National Forest announced two timber tracts totaling 12.75 million board feet for 25 254.50 dollars with Murphy Veneer Co as the bidder. A separate helicopter sale of 12.2 million board feet from 237 acres near Powers went to Erickson Air Crane Co for 118 160 dollars. The Sikorsky S 64 Skycrane will harvest old growth Douglas fir and Port Orford cedar over about three months starting February 8. Visitors may view the operation at the Kelly Creek site. details are at the Powers Ranger station.

Local sailor earns honor after Navy recruit training

Seaman Donald S. Sturgill was commended as company honorman by his commanding officer after completing basic training at the Navy recruit training command in Orlando Florida. He was cited for exemplary character and leadership and assigned to the Nuclear Training School at Great Lakes. Sturgill attended Myrtle Point High School and Southwestern Oregon Community College before enlisting.

Chamber Eyes Film At Myrtle Point Chamber Meeting

The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce plans a Monday program at Loy's Myrtle Point Restaurant showing a film about a Mimon helicopter logging. The S41 screening starts around 12 40 p m after a local event. Attendees are invited to join. Heart Sunday drive planned by Myrtle Point NHS

Members of the National Honor Society at Myrtle Point High School will canvass residential areas on Heart Sunday February 27 to raise funds for the Oregon Heart Association. Mrs Kenneth Galloway Heart Fund chairman said the drive starts shortly after 1 pm. She named Homer Peterson business chairman for the local Heart Fund campaign calling on local businesses in the first week of March.

Mental health films slated for Coos Bay weekend festival

The South Coast Chapter of the Oregon Mental Health Association hosts a two day film festival at the Neighborhood Facility Building February 25 and 26 focusing on mental health issues. Principal film Mental Retardation screens Friday evening alongside other shorts on aging and rehabilitation.
