Helicopter logging starts in Powers District Kelly Creek sale
The Powers Ranger District of the Siskiyou National Forest announced two timber tracts totaling 12.75 million board feet for 25 254.50 dollars with Murphy Veneer Co as the bidder. A separate helicopter sale of 12.2 million board feet from 237 acres near Powers went to Erickson Air Crane Co for 118 160 dollars. The Sikorsky S 64 Skycrane will harvest old growth Douglas fir and Port Orford cedar over about three months starting February 8. Local sailor earns honor after Navy recruit training
Seaman Donald S. Sturgill was commended as company honorman by his commanding officer after completing basic training at the Navy recruit training command in Orlando Florida. He was cited for exemplary character and leadership and assigned to the Nuclear Training School at Great Lakes. Sturgill attended Myrtle Point High School and Southwestern Oregon Community College before enlisting.
