Myrtle Point principal announces Project Prometheus a six week summer program at Southern Oregon College for about 200 gifted sophomores and juniors. Full scholarships offered to all accepted students. Courses focus on humanities social science science and independent study.
Clarence Barton of Coquille former Speaker of the Oregon House announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for State Representative in Coos County. He served in four regular and two special sessions beginning in 1987 and earlier chaired taxation committees, with national tax conference appearances in Houston and New York City.
Everett Mapes, 56, father of Mrs. Art Egelhoff of Myrtle Point and Joseph Mapes of Yakima, died Monday February 7 at Newport Community Hospital. A Salem service followed a life spent mostly in Oregon since moving in 1908. He leaves 10 grandchildren.
Back to seek a sixth term as Oregon State Representative for Coos and Curry counties announced this week in Port Orford. The veteran legislator has chaired commerce and utilities and natural resources committees and led highway improvements in his district. Police took John Dale McCollum into custody for non payment of a city court fine. John McCaffree announced his high school camera club will enter a nationwide photo contest. Budget committees of the school district will meet at 6 p.m. in the high school library with sessions on February 21 and 24.
Services for Elizabeth Lett were held at 1 30 p m on Saturday February 12 in Schroeder's cemetery Lett was born July 11 1881 in Powers and lived in Myrtle Point most of her life dying February 8 at age 84 She was a member of the Myrtle Point Methodist Church She is survived by a daughter Mrs Dorma Peters on and grandson Donald both of Norway and sisters Evia Strang of Coquille and Sarah McCloskey of Myrtle Point Along with many nieces and nephews
Myrtle Point planners discussed a city housing code to upgrade substandard housing and proposed eight acres of city land near Maple Street for trailer sites with 25 lots of 70 by 100 feet served by water and sewer. A 30 to 35 percent substandard housing share and declining property valuations were noted.
The wrestling team defeated Pacific 34 to 11 and Glide 29 to 20 over the weekend. Myrtle Point star Ron Mesca and Don Jerry Stidham earned pins as team momentum grows under coach Doug Mack.
About 30 people met in the Myrtle Grange hall to explore building a heated, covered pool. Panelists outlined federal loan and grant avenues, an informal committee formed to gauge interest, and cost estimates showing a $150,000 project with government aid and a bond plan.
Myrtle Point slows Coquille’s pace but cannot overcome the Red Devils. Dennis Dayton scores the Bobcats lone point early as Myrtle Point trails 21 8 at halftime. Coquille shoots 13 34 while Myrtle Point sinks 9 32 in a low scoring affair. Princesses named for GAA Sweetheart Ball and FFA sub district speakers noted with Meyer taking runner up in public speaking.
Jim King announced Monday that Point High earned honor roll status for the first semester. Students with perfect grades include Myrtle Point seniors. other honor students include Dan Brewster Dan Kills Bob Howell Mike Labert David Mast and many more.
Myrtle Point travels to Gold Beach as part of Sunset Six play seeking revenge after a 51-48 loss at home. Gold Beach topped Myrtle Point 56-54 in a late basket in round two and sits near the top of the standings behind standout guard Steve King and rebounders Jim Rowe and Moomaw.
The Myrtle Point Bobcats defeated Brookings 75 to 59 led by Steve Rey who scored nine points in the game. The Bruins fell behind early then rallied but could not close the gap as MP extended its lead into the second half.
