Seventy organizations received letters from a committee seeking to organize a Myrtle Point area recreation district. Tonight at 8 pm at Myrtle Grange in Norway a panel will report on a long term recreation building program and potential federal funding for a heated pool.
Coquille faces top ranked Red Devils Friday as Gary Carroll leads a balanced Satan attack. Ray and Dayton threaten the Devils’ defense in a key A-2 matchup after Coquille won the first meeting of the year.
The Detlefsens thank donors who supplied blood for a local need in memory of their son Paul who died January 19 in Portland after heart surgery. A January 31 bloodmobile collection yielded 108 pints to restock local blood supplies.
McGarys Bay Shell Plant and Mrs. Robert McGary longtime Coos county residents and former North Bend locals become owners of Shell Distributing. Mrs. MacKerren takes over the new A W drive in Myrtle Point as owners. Jack Pikley to continue with the plant. Mr. McGary previously worked in North Bend with Asbury Trans. The McGarys have three children.
A two day sheep shearing course is announced at Oregon State University. Applicants must be sixteen or older by March 1 and should apply by March 21. Materials and instruction will be provided by the Sunbeam Co. through Ed. Eee.
Carl Shoemaker Pacific Power and Light salesman suffers a compound fracture of the left leg facial lacerations and a broken left arm and is treated at Ketzer Memorial hospital. The crash occurred about 8 30 am Tuesday as Shoemaker attempted to pass a vehicle on 30th street and Ocean Blvd between Empire and Coos Bay and collided head on with an oncoming car driven by Robert L. White.
The dedication ceremony for the new Coquille postoffice is set for 10:30 am Friday February 1 in the Junior auditorium at the Coquille community building with Rep Jubert Duncan as speaker. An open house will follow at the postoffice. More than 260 people crowded the Elks country club Sunday for a crab feed with 450 pounds of cracked crab served.
City council weighs 24 hour police radio service a move that would push the budget beyond six percent levy limits. A bakery remodeling proposal for the Whitaker building is discussed alongside plans to remove downtown planter boxes and urban renewal debates.
Ramona Evans is named Heart Sunday campaign chairman with Ross Pinkley and John Menegat among organizers. The month-long Heart Fund Campaign runs February 14 to 20 with a volunteer corps to canvass neighborhoods. Lutheran services are scheduled for 7 p.m. and Sunday school at 9 15 a.m.
State Department of Education releases a detailed 1 tax limitation study in Salem analyzing effects on each district and county. The statewide loss exceeds 80 million with wide county variation. Coos county faces over 80 percent revenue loss while Wheeler districts see none.
Oran Courtis 46 of Coquille dies after a February 2 head on crash near Myrtle Point. His wife Lois Betty and two children LaVerne 13 and Gary 6 were injured. Om Shuster 40 of Bandon and his wife in other car also involved. Courtis died at Mast Hospital. Mrs Counts treated in Eugene for jaw and rib injuries. Shuster’s injuries minor.
