Local Geer Nall Coquille Valley golfers defeated Bandon Golf Club on their home course by a wide margin in a Sunday interclub match. Forty six players competed as Ray Whiteside distributed prizes at the clubhouse for low scores long drive and closest to the pin. Two more interclub events are planned later in the season with dates to be announced.
Ritchie Francis driving in dense fog hit black ice on a sloped Brockaway cut off near Brockaway Dullard. The car flipped into Rice Creek and sank water up to windows. Ritchie, Shirley, and Julie escaped. Julie frightened. Fritz the dog rescued by Ritchie. all suffered severe colds, dog reportedly uninjured.
Ed Roush former Cincinnati Reds outfielder and Oakland City Indiana native is elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. He is described as having a rangy build and 18 major league seasons with a 323 career batting average. Induction is planned for July.
Coquille defeats Myrtle Point 62 55 as Red Devils surge in second quarter after a tight start. Bobcats recover to beat Siuslaw 52 40 with strong scoring from Hatfield Down and Johnson in a second win of the week.
Under coach Guido Caldarazzo, Bobost crushed Brookings 35 to 11 securing all division wins this season aside from a loss to Al Marshfield. Wrestlers included 98 lb Bruce Winningham 4 2 and 123 lb Don Pallin pin in 1 22 first round. Jayvees won 26 to 5.
The Bloodmobile will visit Myrtle Point February 13 from 2 to 6 p.m. with a 100 pint quota. Dr E Beber will supervise with two nurses, and volunteers from the Lions club Jaycees and Jayceettes assist. The council discussed deteriorating buildings and adopted an ordinance upgrading condemnation procedures and requiring study before council action. A separate street improvement project for an east side block was set to be considered, with a protest threshold and summer bid linkage to Spruce and Maple work.
John Rhodes, March of Dimes chairman for Myrtle Point, announced the drive netted 473.60. Contributions came from Mothers March 225.57 store boxes 140.03 American Legion cards 988.00 American Legion Auxiliary 5.00 Xi Alpha Nu 10.00 Friendly Neighbors Club 3.00. Rhodes thanked volunteers and listed participating women.
Bob Cowart manager of the local TV Systems was named drive chairman for the United Good Neighbors campaign to be kicked off in the South end of Coos County. Jackson Moore announced the appointment during a city visit and Cowart will choose assistants as plans for the drive are outlined before kickoff. The fund supports 25 agencies that would otherwise run their own drives.
The Myrtle Hotel will change hands on February 8 as Floyd and LaFariette take over management from Don and Deloris Wagner who opened the hotel about three years ago. The new managers plan a complete living room and hotel service expansion and will open the hotel once the transfer is finalized.
The Baptist Church of Myrtle Point schedules its first services in the new Stover Lane building eight years after the 1964 organize meeting. John Fenderson, pastor, notes completion is partial with dedication to be announced, Sunday school at 9:45, worship at 11, youth 6, and evening 7. The 7,000 square foot structure, valued above 65 000, relies heavily on volunteer labor.
The District 4 Budget Committee met to keep Myrtle Crest fees steady and to study proposed janitor salary increases and a teacher salary schedule. They discussed limited extra transportation for Bridge and Broadbent first and second graders and planned to cost it before the next meeting.
Cawree Cone Drive plans a two night cattle drive with calves born en route. Trucks will follow to collect calves, with part of the journey along US highway 24 through Mt Vernon and a move over Pleasant Will between John Day and Mt Vernon in the early Tuesday hours.
Coes County board records show Fair Beard purchasing a two acre strip from the Dodge estate. The transaction alters the Pass Ground boundary and a fence will be moved this spring to enclose the newly acquired property.
