Coquille red devils edged Myrtle Point 47 42 to seize the district lead as Coquille and Myrtle Point traded leads and miscues. Myrtle Point must beat Coquille in the season finale to remain district contenders. Coquille dominated rebounding and defense while Bobcats battled turnovers and poor passes.
Fred Gross a Catching Creek rancher was elected president of the Coos County Livestock Association at the 26th annual meeting held Saturday at Myrtle Point High School. Frank Rema passed the gavel as Lew Hedgepeth and Ivan Young outlined patrol standards and brush burning permits.
Myrtle Point Jaycees received a telegram from Congressman Durno urging continuation of the Coquille River flood control study. The message notes Eisenhower’s $4000 budget for the project and Kennedy’s revised plan, pledging continued efforts to secure the appropriation this year.
Slides of log jams on the Coquille River will be shown at the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday February 6 during the noon hour at the Myrtle Hotel. Ed Throckmorten of the Coquille Chamber will narrate. All interested are urged to attend and bring a guest. The campaign aims to clean up rivers and tributaries neglected for up to thirty years, vital to farmers, fish and game enthusiasts, and the public.
The Mothers March for the March of Dimes netted 191.17 with Beta Sigma Phi Beta Delta Gamma Lambda Alpha Nu groups contributing. A Myrtle Point vs Powers Lions basketball game raised 31.61 as a March of Dimes fundraiser. a return game is set for tonight in Powers. Participants included numerous local club members and players from Myrtle Pointers and Powers teams.
Mrs Raymond G Mary Rice of Epplers Court in Myrtle Point won two hundred dollars in Stop and Shop cash certificates Saturday at Dol-A-Wise Super Market after hearing her name over the loud speaker. A second draw for one hundred dollars is set for Saturday February 11 at two o clock in participating stores.
A Myrtle Pointers and Housewives for 42 plan to attend a Salem public hearing at the state capitol on Tuesday February 7 to urge release of $4 million in Highway 42 bonds frozen for lack of federal matching funds. They say bond unfreezing will allow ongoing work to continue and prevent halt of projects affecting the community and outlying districts. Citizens will arrange own transport as no bus charters are planned this year.
Dairymen will visit Carl's Myrtle Crest Dairy at Arago and Don Schmidt dairy at Norway to tour new buildings and feeding equipment during the annual meeting Monday Feb 6. Ed Russell says discussion will cover production testing culling herd replacements and labor saving methods. A director for each of six districts will be elected and a noon supper provided by local dairy interests.
The event features advanced and beginner groups with girls aged 6 to 15 under Vivian Hill and Sandy Dillon. Both instructors run separate classes but have paired for this appearance in a show not to miss.
The Myrtle Point Community Building hosts a free skating party starting at seven. The rink will then be open every 2nd and 4th Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. for the public to enjoy.

The Oregon State Game Commission finalized 1961 fishing rules on January 27, including earlier season openings and stream closures. The plan sets a general trout season April 22 to October 31 with zone specific dates, adjusts Rogue river salmon limits, and tightens high lake closures to protect spawning kokanee and native trout.
