Hundreds of Greyhound travelers in Portland were stranded as a strike by depot workers halted operations at the Central depot. Buses could not load or discharge passengers on driveways or streets, forcing curb loading for a day before an ordinance blocked street loading. Continued on Page 3.
A clipping from The Amarillo Tex News Globe reproduces a Democratic column railing at wartime policy. The writer laments distrust in leaders, questions huge defense spending, and urges public protest, noting bitterness even at coffee counters and in women’s clubs as the nation faces stress.

Duane Hayes speaker at the third annual FFA FHA banquet at Akigh School praised youth movements in a free country and warned against goose stepping regimes. The event drew 296 attendees including parents, faculty and friends who enjoyed a turkey banquet.
The steelhead derby ended January 27 with Harry Collier of Arago winning first grand prize at 17 pounds 0 ounces. Bill Sinko, 17 pounds 0 ounces, took second and Bill Shorb of Powers, 17 pounds 5 ounces, finished third. The event may resume to claim outstanding weekly prizes once weather warms.
The Coos County Fair association will hold its annual meeting at Myrtle Point City Hall next Saturday at 2 PM. Directors will be elected and officers chosen for the coming year. Harold Clarno oversees notice. Norwood Browne may resign. A report on the Portland State fair board meeting will be presented. P C Roper Tex Billingsley L H Pearce attended. Roper elected to the state board.
Elton A Schroeder of Henry A Schroeder & Sons returned from Portland with equipment for a new Serve Yourself Laundry in Myrtle Point. The setup will include four automatic washers two automatic electric dryers one wringer washer a sorting area and a waiting room. When ready customers will use the downstairs area of the new Schroeder building with reasonable prices matching other Coos county laundries.
Five infants arrived this week at Mast hospital after a star dust ride. Three girls and two boys born to families in Myrtle Point Coquille and Four Mile. Parents listed include Norman Jacobgen Four Mile. John T Parish Myrtle Point. Charities V Sabin Myrtle Point. Phillin J Seeber Coquille. Thomas B Jackson Coquille. Dates range January 24 to January 28, 1951.
Ed Roberts, president of the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce, has called the first meeting of the newly organized chamber for Tuesday noon next week in the Myrtle Hotel banquet room. He will announce plans and committee appointments and a board of directors will be elected. No ticket sales. attendance open to all.
The Coos County Community Concert association schedules a Monday evening performance at 815 p m in the Marshfield High School auditorium Coos Bay featuring bass baritone James Pease. Pease is regarded as a leading entertaining concert artist on the operatic stage. Admission is by membership card only.
Thirteen Odd Fellows from a local lodge traveled to Bandon Tuesday night for an exempli gratia degree ceremony for Myrtle Point’s four candidates Ray Hutchinson Mears Ernest Krewson and 23 local Odd Fellows attended the event including Olaf Edelman Lyman Rackieff and George Hughes.
Arthur F Gibbs former pastor of the Kirtland Temple in Ohio and South Pacific missionary will hold a series of Bible prophecy lectures at the newly completed Re organized Church of Jesus Christ chapel in Myrtle Point February 4 to 11. Each evening begins with a color illustrated travelogue at 7 45 followed by the lecture. The program includes topics such as war with Russia after death where came the American Indian and the Book of Revelations. Pastor George Price invites all to attend and a free will offering will be taken. The chapel dedication will occur during these services.
Grandfather figure chosen secretary during the Monday night reorganization of Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Lewis T. Knight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billingsley of Little Rock Arkansas, is mother to a baby daughter born early Tuesday morning. Mrs. Billingsley plans returning to Myrtle Point about March 1 per Tex.
Don Sutphin of Myrtle Point Oregon a guard on Skeet O Connor s Ow basketball squad carries an average of 20.5 points after two series with Eastern Oregon College and Oregon College of Education He has played 13 games this season and holds an overall 17.8 point average His high scoring game is 29 points against Clark College of Vancouver Washington

A small yet eager crowd enjoyed an evening of music and drama at Myrtle Point High School last Friday. The 58‑piece high school band directed by Arnold Melby and the drama department led by Jim Burrows performed a varied program including The Star Spangled Banner Indiana State Band The Traveller Over ture Tiger Rag Harmony Queen Overture and the one act play Minor Miracle featuring Charlie Bingham Bob Whitaker Phil Mast and Richard Briggs.
Lane county soil conservation and erosion supervisor Mr. Flippin will speak at Myrtle Point Grange on Saturday evening at 8 o clock. The open meeting invites all interested in soil conservation and questions will be answered. Public invited.
