Federal health custodians publish a controversial stance while cranberries face market bans over weed killer fears. Local stores will close this Saturday following Christmas as per Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce leaders and a proclamation by Mayor Bud Griffin. Some groceries will stay open Saturday and Sunday, offering weekend access.
A Hiland theatre crowd attended the Chamber of Commerce Christmas prize drawings. Prizes included 75 first grand, 30 second grand, 25 third grand and 12 turkeys awarded to named winners and others. Austin Dodge announced prizes with Bill Downing and Leroy Robinson assisting. Ann Roush handled the outside bulletin board.
A candlelight service is planned at the Presbyterian church this Thursday evening at 7 30. High school students will read the Christmas story from scriptures and the choir led by Paul Clute will present a Christmas message in song. Rev Swenson will give a brief meditation as all join in Christmas carols and the service of lights. The event is interdenominational and open to all.
The Lions club and Hiland Theatre hosted a large kids Christmas party with a free movie and Santa Claus providing gifts. About 800 "Christmas bugs" were distributed after the show as Lions Ben Daniels Joe Avina Rudy Rochek and others assisted. The crowd and festive chaos delighted attendees despite Santa being too busy for a photo.
Past Masters of Myrtle No 78 AF and AM will meet at the lodge at 7 30 Sunday evening then attend a church service at the local church to commemorate St John’s Day. Bud Griffin urges full attendance at the lodge hall. A driver license examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point on Wednesday December 30 1959 at city hall from 9 00 am to 4 00 pm per the Oregon DMV.
