Students Eligible For Speech Contest

Fourteen sophomores and juniors at Myrtle Point High School may enter the Odd Fellows United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth Contest. District winner receives a month long tour of monuments across the United States and Canada, with stops at the Liberty Bell Lincoln Memorial Kennedy grave and United Nations Security Council. Entrants must prepare a speech on the United Nations and may contact Mrs Manley Sterr or Mrs Ellis Lewis for details. John Meldrum, MPHS senior, was a district alternate last year.

Myrtle Grange Installs Officers in Norway Hall

Myrtle Grange installed officers Sunday night December 18 at the Grange hall in Norway with Harold Potts of Sumner presiding. The lineup included Master John Caudle, Secretary Emma Barzee, Treasurer Lawrence Clinton, Lecturer Mrs Russ Evans, Steward Ellis Southmayd, Assistant Steward Emmett Hammack, Lady Assistant Steward Mrs Emmett Hammack, Chaplain Mrs Ellis Southmayd, three graces Mrs Stanton Stevens Pavlons, Mrs John Caudle, and Mrs Dean Brown, with Stan ton Stevens as outside gatekeeper and an executive committee including Ellis Southmay, Emmett Hammack, and Russ Evans alongside musician Vada Clinton. Myrtle Point fire brigade responded to Jim Neal Jr residence at about 1:00 p.m. Sunday to a bedding heater fire.

Teachers seek $6000 base raise and extra pay adds

At the December 14 district 41 school board meeting the teacher consultation committee presented a demand for a $6000 base raise to put the district among the state’s top salaries. They urged higher pay for extra duty staff and better medical coverage for employees only, plus boosts for substitute teachers.

Joe Stewart Attends Traffic Safety Confab

Delegates from across the state totaling nearly 400 attended the Governor's Conference on Traffic Safety in Salem on December 9. The one day session in the Capitol Building covered driver education driver re examination court systems periodic motor vehicle inspection safety council organization and enforcement practices under the Federal Highway Safety Act. Joe Stewart superintendent of Myrtle Point School District 41 attended from Myrtle Point.

Christmas Eve Services at Christian and Methodist Churches

Christmas Eve worship at the Christian Church at 700 p.m. Saturday December 24 includes choir and congregational carols a Christmas meditation a candlelighting ceremony and informal attire The Methodist Church hosts a candlelight service at 11:00 p.m with Reverend Gerald Nelson delivering The Message of Redeeming Light.

City Council Votes to Vacate Two Alleys and Move Shop Fence

The December council meeting approved vacating alley on block 16 between Mom's Drive-In and Shell station and another alley north to south bounds between Ash and Alder. A street fence by city shops on Alder Street was approved to curb theft. An audit contract for the new year was awarded to C. W. Wray and associates.

Firemen Respond Twice In Overnight Flu Fire Alarms

Local fire department was dispatched twice within four hours this week. The first call occurred about 7 30 p m Monday at the Jerry Boggs residence 433 18th Street. The second call came at approximately 6 00 a m Tuesday morning at 1130 DPipae Mirpet the residence of Lynwood Rhiénsen with both incidents ruled as flu fires.
