County court house staff held a rare gathering at a county seat hotel on a Wednesday evening enjoying a turkey dinner and gift exchange. In six years only two similar events had occurred, with past occasions at Norway for Mr Mre C GQ trade and at Dr James Richmonds cabin in Bandon for a pre nuptial shower.
Ward McReynolds will conduct state examinations for operators and chauffeurs at the town hall in Byrtle Point next Thursday December 28 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Those seeking permits or licenses to drive cars should contact McReynolds at that time.
Construction work continues on the LH Pearce garage and service station at the northeast corner of Bennce and Fourth streets. Plans include moving the front back 29 feet and adding a cantilevered marquee, rebuilding interior floors, and expanding display and storage space to make the facility the most up to date in the area.
Sunday callers include Mias Rose Shelock and Jerry Haley with Mr and Mrs Ed Alien Viet Over. Wayne Carver arrives from San Diego to spend holidays with relatives. Polands depart for Yreka. Barklow family gathering with Emma Barklow. Whitaker family to Spokane for holidays. Jimmie Albee Warren Davis and Harry Beal travel to Portland for a business trip.
North Powers residents hosted callers from Clyde Thorp and family and Ad ian Ward of Ten mile last week. WPA employees enjoy a two week vacation returning after Christmas. Local visits included Coquille travelers, basketball game attendance in Myrtle Point and Port Orford, and relatives from Bend and Coos River spending the holiday period.
The Southwestern Oregon Funeral Directors held their annual meeting in North Bend naming Harry Grena as president and Charles Schroeder as vice president with Mra Gildys Gano as secretary treasurer. Philip Zeller and Karl Mills attended as past presidents and discussed plans for 1939 and the 1930 state convention. Numerous members from Marshfield, Coquille, Reedsport, Myrtle Point, North Bend and Portland were present.
The Bank of Powers will relocate Jan 3 to Sweet Home Oregon, becoming the Bank of Sweet Home. Funds and deposits move with arrangements for check routing. staff and offices remain, led by President W Powers and team, with local civic groups assisting the transition.
A New Years Eve WCTU gathering brought reps from Marshfield North Bend Coquille Arago and Myrtle Point to a local Brethren church. Discussions covered past work and plans for centenary events in Willard's honor plus goals to form two new unions two Loyal Temperance Legions a Youth Temperance Unit and a $60 gift to the Children's Farm at Corvallis. County officers named include President Mrs C C Farr Coquille and Vice President Mrs Ipe Mee.
A New Years Eve ball will be given at the Coquille Valley Country Club on Saturday December 31 with excellent music promised. The large ballroom provides ample space for dancing and the beauteous surroundings make it an ideal spot to welcome the coming year.
At the Monday meeting the Woman's Club led by president Mrs Walter Laird conducted business then program chairwomen Mrs Eugene Laird and Mrs Floyd Summers presented. Coos County Public Health head Mrs Elbert Schroeder spoke on The History of Tuberculosis with county state and national context. Junior high girls led by Miss Helen Blodgett sang Christmas carols and three students in Mrs H Clarke's music class performed a musical number.
Mr and Mrs Lyle Knight welcome Arlene Maybell Knight born Tuesday December 38, 1988 at Mast Hospital. Arlene is the couple’s first child. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Barkdoll of Ul announce Laguna Fern Barkdoll born weighing 84 pounds? at Mast Hospital. Laguna Fern is their first child and the first grandchild for Mr and Mrs Jesse Hayes of Gaylord and the fourth grandchild for Mr and Mrs Benjamin Barkdell of Gaylord.
The Post Matons club of Elgin chapter met at the Henrys Rosslow home Tuesday afternoon. Members exchanged Christmas gifts and a dessert luncheon was served by hostess Mo Rossow. Attendees included Mrs R H Lemon, G L McRay, Ralph Kring, John Belloni, John Arnold, William Lundy, Arthur Chase, and Raleigh Geene of Myrtle Point. Mrs Albert Pancoast and Mrs Fred Sco held of Bridge and Mrs Ernest Clausen of Broadbent. High score went to Mrs Beloni.
Rev and Mrs L Bales plan a Sunday evening church service in East Dora at the old building near the Howe store. Everett Howe has offered use of the space and renovations are under way. The opening is set for Sunday night at 8 30 pm with a possible Sunday school organized later under the motto No Creed but Christ.
Catching Creek residents Erma Legsworth plans a Saturday departure for Ashland to spend holidays with her parents Mr and Mrs A Segsworth. Weekend visits highlight local families including Wests of Lang lois and Myrtle Point, and hay deliveries by T O Bestul.
The Christian Church elected officers including Moore Lyle Paull and Vernon Stone as leaders. Deaconesses named were Mrs Rebecca Adams and others. Church clerk is Filbert Moore and pastor is Dr T M White with Mrs T M White as pianist and Mrs Lewis Miller as treasurer.
The Jr Woman's Club held a Christmas party on Monday with Christene’s gifts for the needy. The club planned to donate 10 to the cause and received about 6 from Christmas merchandise. Mrs. Chester Otis led the program as Junior high girls presented a skit, games followed, and hostesses Miss Deieres Bellen and Elton Carver served refreshments.
Readers record a flurry of Sunday calls and holiday returns across Gravelford Powers Springfield and nearby towns. Notices mention Walter Schroeder and the Levert Iverson home in Gravelford plus Miss Mary Watkins from Halls Creek who came home from Eastern Oregon Normal. Several students returned from Oregon institutions for the holidays and visitors traveled to Salem Portland Corvallis Bend and Bendon for family and business.
