The Myrtle Point area reports 170 absentees at Myrtle Creek 170 Sprite 28 Maple 37 Bride 16 and high school 133 as flu spreads from Portland and Southwest Washington. Some chicken pox appeared at Maple. superintendent Armstrong keeps schools open unless conditions worsen, citing health guidance and anticipated stabilization.
Diane Dement daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam Dement of 724 South 7th won the Coquille Valley Elks Youth Leadership contest for girls. She has a 3.80 GPA, is president of the Honor Society and Rainbow worker. Sue Sweet of Bandon HS took second. two Coquille boys were noted as top athletes. The event awards cash prizes and supports regional and national contests.
Police department releases official weather observations for the week noting rainfall of 14 inches and a river level of 27 feet.
City Planning Commission endorsed a new Myrtle Point Grange Supply cooperative to be built east of Dee's Market on Ash street. The coop formed from Bridge-Broadbent Purchasing Association will house 200 farm families with officers Tom Luttrell Andy Waterman Wayne Babcock Glen Gulstrom and Thord James Miller. The project will relocate from high industrial zoning after a city ordinance amendment and will use wood laminated beams for a post free one story building on a 7/10 acre lot recently bought from Harry Cement.
Phyllis Mullins of Norway received minor cuts and bruises when a car driven by Vern Worland of Myrtle Point skidded on icy pavement and rolled over Bear Creek Hill on the Bandon Coquille highway.
Tom Johnson scores 33 over two nights as Myrtle Point wins 54 37 against Reedsport and loses 41 38 to Myrtle Creek. Johnson leads with 16 in the Myrtle Creek win while Down adds 10. Myrtle Creek jumps to an early lead and holds off a late rally, as Bob Peterson’s JV also posts wins and losses.
Polini city council rejected the Methodist church bid of 14400 for the city hall after a lengthy special meeting. They offered 25000 to the church and left open the option of sale or relocation while delaying decisions on space for another fire truck and church expansion plans. The church canceled a congregation meeting as its building committee reviews space needs.
The final Stop and Shop drawing before Christmas offers $500 to the winner at 2 pm this Saturday. Five names will be drawn and each winner in a Stop and Shop merchant store at 2 pm will receive $100. Winners must be present in a participating store.
The District 41 School Board votes to hire Erickson and Associates of Coos Bay for a preliminary survey of building needs at up to 500 dollars. If a building program proceeds, the survey cost will be absorbed into overall charges. The meeting focused on closing Spruce school soon and establishing a junior high promptly.
The Myrtle Point Jaycees announce their annual outdoor decoration contest with no cost divisions. Entry forms available at Don’s Drug Store or Bob’s Chevron Service or enter by writing Jaycee’s box 425 Myrtle Point. Judging by the Jaycettes covers exterior décor visible from outside, including trees, scenes, roof decorations, and interior displays. Prizes to be announced by Jaycee committee co chairs Dot Schimer and Bob Phillips.
Millie Dell Myers long time Myrtle Point resident and co founder of Myers and Myers department store died Monday at a local hospital aged 89. Funeral services were held at Schroeder Brothers Chapel with Rev John Woods officiating and burial at Sunset Memorial Park Coos Bay. She moved from Brad ford Iowa to Coos Bay in 1916 and to Myrtle Point in 1920. Her store with daughter Melba opened in 1925 and was owned by Mitch Myers and his wife from 1945. Survivors include Mitch Melba two grandchildren Jim and Vic and twin great grandchildren Hank and Harry.
The Methodist Sunday school will present its annual Christmas program next Sunday at 4 00 p.m directed by Mrs John Dayton A rehearsal is set for Saturday afternoon at 2 08 p.m followed by a Christmas party for the children in the church social hall
A schedule of Christmas programs across School District 41 lists events at Broadbent Maple and Spruce Arago Dora Sitkum Myrtle Crest and Bridgie. Programs include lower and upper grade Christmas carols instrumental ensembles and nativity scenes with dates December 14 to December 21.
