City council delays decision on Spruce and Maple streets project after a survey shows 42.5 percent in favor and 31.2 percent opposed, with 26 percent unresponsive. A large wall map depicting land use, including single unit and multi family dwellings, commercial and industrial zones, is now on display to aid future zoning planning.
Mitch Myers was unanimously elected president of the Chamber of Commerce succeeding Charles Poehlitz. Dean Mason was named 1st vice president with Jack Ellis as 2nd vice president. Tex Billingsley and Mrs. Ray Harris were re elected treasurer and secretary respectively. Poehlitz thanked members and Myers vowed to push committees hard, with appointments to be announced December 18.
A Boston Sunday Herald feature examines the Radcliffe Institute of Independent Study and its aims to keep talented women free to pursue careers. The article also surveys Dr Alice Dement’s career and discusses the institute as a program for gifted women away from domestic obligations.
A dinner event will honor Myrtle Point’s State Class A-2 co champions. Ted Ogdahl of Willamette University will speak at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria with co-chairmen Chet Weed and Elton Schroeder. Tickets are $2 and available at local merchants. attendees urged to bring guests for a full evening of entertainment.
Myrtle Point opened the season with a 41-33 loss to Douglas on Friday then defeated Myrtle Creek 47-35 Saturday. Dick Down led scoring against Douglas with nine points while Bruce Gibeau and Tom Johnson added six and seven. Saturday saw multiple players in double figures as Town led with sixteen points and Hatfield added eleven. The junior varsity also split, with Hatfield the top scorer over the two games.
Southwestern Oregon College has been notified by Dr. Wem Loan and State Education officials that it meets all requirements for full accreditation as a two year institution. Earl Pallett, secretary of the State Board of Higher Education, announced the formal decision.
The Christmas Cantata Child of Heaven will be performed Monday night December 11 at the Methodist church. Thirty five voices form the Inter church Fellowship directed by Mrs. John Dayton. A ladies trio includes Mrs. Floyd Oyster Mrs. Carol Crook and Miss Ruth Applegate. The men's trio features Etton Andley Richie Dayton and Edgar Moon. Mr Moon and John Dayton sing a duet with soloists Mrs G E Albertson Mrs Edward Rasmussen and Kerry Dayton. The public is invited.
The Methodist church board on Monday offered the city $14 400 for city hall in a letter to the council saying the price is tentative until an all congregational meeting on December 14. The council split on action with officials unsure about appraising the Roush building or the hall.
Mrs. Leonard Boekelman and daughter-in-law Mrs. Tuffy Boekelman have assumed ownership of Mom's Drive-In on Sth street. They plan a grand opening within a week or two while keeping service to regular patrons. The drive-in will close only from 4 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday and operate 24 hours the other six days. Leonard and Tuffy help as time allows. both are loggers and emphasize the business is led by the women of the house. A complete renovation and painting are planned before the grand opening.
The Myrtle Point Lions club will sell brooms this Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm in the business district. They aim to raise funds for Camp Faster Seal and plan a repeat sale after a recent successful event.
Harold Clarno longtime manager of the Coos County Fair was honored by the Ore State fair association. The report notes a net profit of 906,410 and a cash balance over 250,000 with total assets of 1,346,960. A $196,000 horse barn project was announced for next year.
No winners emerged from the $400 Stop and Shop drawing held last Saturday in Myrtle Point. Names called but absent include Ruth Hermann Colleen McCall Edward Teasley and Betty Tyre. The next big drawing on the 1st will be for $500. shoppers not registered should leave name and address with a participating merchant to be eligible.
The American Legion will host a Christmas Turkey Party on Friday evening December 15 at the Legion Hall. A similar affair was held before Thanksgiving.
