The Myrtle Point Independents opened with a 30 to 4 victory over Powers Independents. Coach Elie Shorty Skull praised the squad after last year’s district championship and predicted another strong season for the locals.
The WCTU group met at the Chichef Crest on Tuesday to pack a gift box for the Children’s Farm Home. The box included clothing and quilts valued at 49 dollars. A variety sale is planned for Tuesday January 23 to raise funds for the Farm Home and WCTU work.

Myrtle Point High School will be closed until Monday due to illness among students. Principal L P Linn says the recess follows medical advice from Dr H H Thomas noting many students show flu symptoms and a large portion are affected.
A Myrtle Greenhouses display opened by A M Cocoper occupies the southeast corner of Spruce and Sixth Streets featuring shrubs bulbs potted plants and cat flowers as festive Christmas gift items.
A Vancouver ceremony united Robert Wilson and Hacet Owens on Thursday. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs M Owens of Dora, and the groom’s parents reside in Portland. The couple now live in the Xamas Valley area.
Members heard a committee report on oiling supply issues and decor plans for Christmas streets. The club appointed Ben Beton, Sosoo, Elvin Zachs and Vloyd Fowler to decorate the streets and Edgar Rickard Spencer Ward Eldon Brodie to organize the Christmas dinner on December 21 at a local cafe. Howard Leatherman shared wartime Europe experiences and noted German youth favoring Hitler with elder opposition.
An anniversary dance will be held Saturday at the Lakeside gym honoring Mr and Mrs James Brown and Mr and Mrs Victor Murto Lakeside for December weddings. Proceeds benefit Lakeside High School basketball uniforms. Bernherd Murto chairs the committee. All are invited to attend.
Myrtle Point women bowling team repeated victory over Coquille women at Coquille alleys. The championshi team included Mrs Walter Spaks Mrs Donnald Gulkson Mrs Leroy Bake Mrs Roy Whobrey and Mrs Lyle Carver, winning two of three games.
Mrs. Etta Avelina Waterman of Bancroft died suddenly on December 9 1939 after forty years in the community. Born February 2 1880 in Reston she married Clarence Waterman in 1887. Survived by nine children including Clyde and Elvin, two brothers and several spouses. Funeral arrangements pending with local community officers.
Mrs E C Parker reads a thank you note from the local committee after a successful drive.154 members paid 100 dollars each and 30 dollars was donated, yielding 224 dollars in total.
