Clyde Gemes of Myrtle Point was arrested Saturday afternoon on a charge of attempting to extort $10,000 from Harry Dement, cashier of the Security Bank in Myrtle Point. The FBI reports he will be taken to Portland for a federal hearing. potential penalty includes up to $5,000 fine and 20 years in prison. Dement has received threats by letter and phone demanding the money.
Ernest Clausen son of E L and Mrs E L Clausen Broadbent won first prize and $50 for water color portrait in oil El mira Junction at the 10th annual regional art exhibit. Judges from 14 counties used a secret formula to determine winners. Clausen works on interior decorating staff for Breuner's Furniture Co, a major California firm.
The Bridge Extension Unit announces a turkey dinner at the Grange Hall Lat. on Saturday December 11 from 5 to 9 pm. Adults pay 1.50 and children 18. The public is invited.
Spenny Ross sales manager for Henry A. Schroeder & Sons was unanimously elected president of the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce at a Monday meeting in the motel. Frank Meldrum steps down, with Al Wyld Jr as 1st vice president Milton Schroeder as vice president Robert Parsons as secretary and George Linn as treasurer. The group thanked the fire department for Christmas decor work and announced Santa Claus visits on October 18 and December 24. Stores plan to remain open during Christmas week.

She was rushed to Mast hospital with a fractured pelvis and concussions. Dr L B Gould says she is doing fairly well despite the injuries. Mr Watkins was crossing the street at the time of the accident.
The First Christian church Sunday school completed plans for a Christmas program led by Mrs. Leston Dickey. Ken Crow reports all classes from cradle roll to older adult will perform on Thursday night December 23 at 7 30. The community is invited to attend.
The First Methodist Church will present a concert of Christmas songs and carols Sunday evening December 13 at 5 30. Martha Circle will serve refreshments in the social room after the service. The event will include an inter church fellowship that evening and a sermon on the theme It Pays Off.
