In a humorous reminiscence Bert Mecum tells how a Colt revolver discharged when his hammer struck rock on Thomas Mountain. The bullet lodged beneath his shoulder blade and he walked two miles to a neighbor before hospital care. He recovered in eight days and recalls the surgery stitching the wound with a tough hide joke. The tale ends with a note of Burt’s hardy Pioneer persona and a photo with Harold Rushing at the wheel.

Stephen S Reed Pioneer Dies at 85 in Myrtle Point
Stephen Sylvester Reed 85 died at his daughter's home in Eugene on November 25. Funeral held at Church of the Brethren Myrtle Point with burial there. Survived by daughter Mrs Hogan, grandchildren and brothers and sisters. Reed was an early pioneer, son of Oscar and Mary Lenher Reed. He fostered St Maw dairy stock and led Lund Cheese Factory for two decades. He served on the local school board and was a Church of the Brethren minister for about thirty years.
