Local column lampoons odd trends from beards to circus alibis. Nonsensical anecdotes feature Ken Piercy, Me vin Barklow, Ellis Button, Jimmy Myers, Mitch, and others in a humorous parade through town life and small-town bragging rights.
A Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce meeting heard a secretary of state letter read by Judge Thompeos about state funds for fairs and urged Curry County support for the Curry as Coos County Fair. Reports on the veneer plant, mail schedule changes, and RNA conditions were discussed.
The state accident commission rescinds last year’s order naming hospitalization locations for those under its jurisdiction. Effective September 1 the choice of hospital will be left to individuals under the insurance plan.
Displays by A M Cooper proprietor of Motle Greenhouses show two notable gladioli carteties from 70+ varieties. The public praised the vermillion bloom but this week attention shifts to the range of shades from orchid to deep purple now on display.
Dr L L Sumerlin and family faced a difficult year as illness struck monthly. This morning an urgent operation was needed for the Sumerlin daughter Lavaun, a 1 little year old, who underwent an emergency appendix surgery at Mast hospital and was reported doing as well as could be expected.
A fire razed the Ray logging unit at Mirshfield, as reported by Mrs. Frank Tripp through her cr daughter Mrs. Chester Pedono in Pittville. The machinery destroyed was hauled out there this spring and belonged to Non Anderson.
Six year old Donald Lee Kelly of Spruce street was injured when he and Harold Lee Ray jumped and Kelly landed on broken glass, cutting three chunks from the ball of his foot on Wednesday.
The Myrtle Point Future Farmers organize four groups to train for county fair livestock judging. Meetings run Sept 4–7 at various members’ homes with 10 a.m. start. The top two to four from each group will advance to drills and final tryouts from Sept 9 onward. The aim is to win the Coos and Curry cups and hold the trophy.
Mrs. William Bickford from Portland, with daughter and granddaughter Carol Joan Rhoades aged one and a half, were dinner guests today of Mr and Mrs Paul Breuer. Mrs. Bickford’s daughter Miss Eva Bickford once lived with the Breuer family while attending high school in this city. Mr Rhoades is connected with Portland theater.
George Bryant of Coquille, owner of logging camps at Powers and Brewster Valley with his brother Henry, was hurt at his Powers camp. He suffered a double fracture of the lower jaw and could not explain the cause. He was brought to Knife hospital in Coquille at 1 30 this afternoon after a line struck him. he was substituting for a missing worker and was in shock.
Jean Pressler son of Mrs. Walter Sykes of Fourth Street leaves this afternoon for Golden Colorado to begin his sophomore year at the Colorado School of Mines.
Miss Falry Davia marries Alex Kelemen of Los Angeles in Myrtle Point. The bride, a local teacher and University of Oregon alumna, is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Devise. The groom, an archaeologist tied to a Los Angeles museum, is noted in diplomatic circles. The couple planned a motor honeymoon tour after a small reception at the bride’s home.
Mrs. George Rackleff of Marsfield, once a Myrtle Point resident, was guest of honor at social events in Coos Bay area. The week included tea by L A LaFlamme, dinners by Ferris Lundy and Mary McDonald, a theater party, a progressive five hundred by L A LaFlamme, and a watermelon feed. The Rackleffs returned to their bay city home Sunday.
An August field meeting near Fairview and a North Bay Side tour showcased alfalfa, soy beans and potato projects. County Agent George Jenkins noted alfalfa’s potential for coastal yields. 4-H clubs and grange members highlighted irrigation trials and seed quality efforts with several farms hosting plantings and demonstrations.
A Portland flour concern held a homing pigeon race from Broadbent store on Saturday at 2 PM. Of four birds only one completed the flight to Portland in 5 hours 22 minutes, delayed by smoke from forest fires. Prizes went to Julia Barkley of Myrtle Point for first, Luanna Fry of Broadbent for second, and Ed Whobrey of Broadbent for third.
In the Coquille valley and Myrtle Point area Dewey Kollar showcases a display featuring a World Beater Bell green pepper fourteen inches in circumference and ten ounces. The exhibit also includes exceptionally large peaches, Italian prunes, Golden Tankard and Heavy Cropper beets, and Oregon Giant green beans grown by Kollar on the J W Bell ranch in West Myrtle Point.
Rural teachers gather in Circuit Court Room Coquille at 1000 am on September 2. County superintendent to distribute the year's supplies and library books. Several teachers will report on studies and test results from the county and during the second session.
The Coos county district monthly Fellowship meeting was held last Monday with Rev Edward O. Robeck of Corvallis delivering an evening sermon. Visiting ministers Rev Clifford C. Catledge Lorraine Catledge Rev James L. Gibson and Rev Call shared remarks, with Mrs Gibson presiding at the piano and Miss Verla V. Johnston assisting. Mrs Bates of Bandon performed accordion selections as refreshments were served in the Christian church.
Mr and Mrs Edward Joelink of Marshfield Mr and Mrs John Felsher and Mrs Ward Evans of Twin Lakes attended the Spanish American War Veterans convention in Los Angeles as delegates. The group traveled via inland route through Sacramento Stockton Bakersfield to Los Angeles. The first day covered business, the second offered a county sponsored sightseeing excursion to Long Beach with studio visits and a large outdoor barbecue. They toured Hollywood before returning to the hotel.

Jerseys judging at Georgeston farm followed by hog judging at J B Moomaw. A noon picnic by the Coquille river. Visit to Clarence Schroeder irrigators project and Peterson Brothers beef cattle judging.
Kenneth Hansen eldest son of Postmaster H. J. Hansen wed Lorna Harris daughter of Minnie Harris of Marshfield in a quiet McKinley ceremony. Friends in the community extend best wishes for their future.
Neighbors were called last Thursday to help extinguish a fire at the Ehrig residence. Lottie Kidside and others aided firefighters with extinguishers. The roof caught fire from a chimney spark caused by a defective flue. Minor damage reported.
