Public agencies in Coos County may have missed as much as 2 million dollars from 1966 to 1974 due to no up to date timber cruise on Coos Bay Wagon Road lands. The 59,714 acre tract straddles Coos and Douglas counties, funds schools in Myrtle Point district 41, and has not been re cruised since 1959 under a 1939 act.

No on Recall Committee Formed in Coos County
Coos County commissioners Loanie Van Elsberg and Mickey Moffitt announce a No on Recall Committee to campaign against the attempted recall. The group will meet Thursday August 28 at 7 30 p m at the Thunderbird in Coos Bay with support from Coos Bay Mayor Robert Hale North Bend Mayor Bev Higgins and other local leaders. The committee plans county wide citizen participation if a recall election is ordered.

Recall petitions filed seek ouster of two county officials
Citizens Recall Committee treasurer Bob Pearce reported 4000 signatures filed to recall Mickey Moffitt by 4:55 PM Friday August 22 and another 4000 for Lonnie Van Elsberg on Monday August 25 at 11:00 AM. A meeting at the Labor Temple in Coquille on August 20 at 8:00 PM will discuss future plans and fundraising, including a planned spaghetti dinner.

Man Killed by Forklift at Coos County Plant
Mike Stidham a 19 year old from Myrtle Point died in a forklift accident at Westloy plant number 2 on Maghway 2 South East of Coquille. The forklift rolled over pinning him beneath it and the Coos County Sheriff's Office was notified at 9 40 AM.

Myrtle Point centenarian marks 100th birthday
Elford Barzee born August 30 1875 eight miles south of Salem will turn 100 in Myrtle Point this week. He moved to town in 1920 built a home on Gravelford road and raised chickens on the farm. Barzee is the last survivor in a family of nine and has eight children, 36 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He still holds a valid driver’s license and reads the Bible daily hoping for more birthdays.

Three yet UO degrees at Summer Commencement
A class of 1252 graduates from the University of Oregon received baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees in the Summer Commencement on August 16. Break at Coos jail sparks investigation in Coquille
An attempted jail break at the Coos County jail in Coquille was discovered Tuesday August 19 by Sheriff Les Auller. A five man cell inmate group chiseled walls torn the ceiling vent and removed plumbing to fashion billy clubs. Charges pending as the sheriff's office works with the district attorney.

Geaney Testifies Before Senate on Sheep Industry
R C Bob Geaney of Bridge Route testified before the U S Senate Small Business Committee in Eugene on August 25. Two Myrtle Polot High School students Curt ben and Mike Noben joined a two week workshop at the University of Oregon Foren sic Instde from August 10 to 22. Instructors, many National College debaters, led eight debates while lectures and research filled the schedule. The topic focused on Development and allocation of world energy resources by an international organization. Neither debater competed last year but plan to join Oxford debate division later, citing coyotes on Coos County ranches and testimony by Geaney on Cedar Point Packing and DEQ issues.
