Townsend Club Plans Picnic at County Meeting

The Townsend club held its weekly meeting at Townsend hall with A A Baker substituting as chair in the absence of president H M Melaa who attended the grange picnic. Discussion centered on a county meeting and a county clubs gathering in Coquille Tuesday to organize work. A note mentions a photo exhibit and an address by W Moorteker about the Orient.

Norway Picnic Seeks turnout from all party lines

A community picnic organized by local Democrats and Republicans invites residents to attend at the county center. Food and coffee will be provided, and officials encourage both men and women to join. City Hall project eyed with WPA funds and new sidewalks

City council discussed bid awards for cement sidewalks and curb work on the WPA project begun this week. About 2580 feet of sidewalks on Fourth street to be finished before Fair week, with ten workers employed. A proposed two story concrete building extension for fire department storage and locker rooms may receive a 45 percent federal grant.

Local High School Opens September 6

The Myrtle Pont Union High School begins with a general assembly on Tuesday September 6 followed by registration. Early registration available Thursday and Friday afternoons September 1 and 7. New teacher Miss Marguerite LaRette joins science and girls' physical education. Seniors must take sociology and economies, juniors American history civics. Golden Wedding Celebrated Sunday At Powell Butte

A large crowd celebrated the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs W H Huff at Powell Butte Sunday afternoon. The event included music and a dinner, with the couple's seven children and twelve grandchildren noted. The Huff family moved from Texas to Oregon in 1908 and lived in Custer County until four years ago.

Multiple County Jail Occupants Face Various Charges

In Wasco and surrounding counties, inmates including Wm O Kelsay aged 29 arrested August 16 on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses and delivered to Sheriff Harold Sexton. Isaac Lutts 63 held for drunk on a public highway with a 10 day sentence. Bira Noser 61 lodged for 30 days vagrancy from Coquille. Vernon E Berg 23 adjudged insane after a recent arrival and sent to the state hospital. R E Parrish 32 arrested at Coquille for assault and battery with a $50 fine. Douglas Jack Frost 8 arrested August 13 for investigation, given a sanity hearing and released. Robert Newkirk 37 fined for drunk on a public highway. R J Cochran 42 held on $5,000 bail for contributing to delinquency of a minor. Edwin Henderson Blankenship 17 picked up August 12 and turned over to Linn County deputy. William F Olsen 41 arrested in Marshfield on drunkenness and sentenced to two commitments.

Rob Bridge Store Robbery Reported Tuesday Night

Robbers broke into the C S Murphy general store and post office at Bridge Tuesday night, breaking a glass window at the back and leaving by the front door. They took some general merchandise and a small amount of cash. A larger amount of cash was reportedly hidden in the state but not found.

This month marks the 18th anniversary in business of Myrtle Point's prominent citizen and current mayor August Barker. He purchased the Moon jewelry shop and has played an active civic role since returning to the area after wartime service. A recent visit by California visitors Frank Cagwin and his party highlighted the milestone.

Local FFA Picnic Sunday Near River

The Future Farmers of America unit in Myrtle Point hosts an annual community picnic on the Lester Strong farm along the Coquille River about one mile south of Lundy Cheese factory. Activities start at 1030 am with a ball game between the boys and Nadas, horseshoe contests, swimming and water sports, races and amusements. a picnic dinner at 1230 invites neighbors to gather for a friendly day.

Frame Residence to Be Converted Into Apartments

Miss Helen Hughes bought the frame residence at the southeast corner of Maple and Sixth streets from the Douglas Building and Loan company. It will be remodeled into four three room apartments with a bath, a new roof already installed, and occupancy hoped for by October. The house has a long ownership history from 1681 starting with Charles Roberts to L A Roberts, A H Black, P L Phelan, Clark Fenster, E C Roberts, Douglas Buildings and Loan, and finally Miss Hughes, with Glenn Barrows the last resident before the sale. It remains in excellent condition due to white cedar construction on a brick foundation.

Auto Damaged on Roseburg Road

Mr and Mrs Dewey Kruse of Roseburg were returning from Coos county with a trailer load of lettuce when Mrs Kruse apparently momentarily closed her eyes near Camas Valley causing the car and trailer to leave the road. The trailer landed on top of the car which turned over and was badly smashed. Pearce's wrecker removed the car from the lettuce heads and towed it into town. The Kruses were not injured.
