Blaze destroys Gravelford Cheese Factory and bridge
A Monday fire at Gravelford Cheese Factory caused by a chimney spark gutted the plant and damaged the adjacent bridge on the Coquille River. Myrtle Point and Marshfield fire units fought the blaze, saved milk and equipment, and contained fire on the bridge before locating the source of the flames. The De Boer home sustained light damage and the factory's insured value was $4000.

Hay Barn Fire Destroys Stock at West Norwsey
A hay fire discovered Tuesday at the L. Lafertfy barn in West Norwsey damaged about 110 tons of hay, with roughly 30 tons saved. The barn itself sustained no structural damage. The blaze was reportedly caused by combustion within the hay.

A seven year old boy, Buster Farmer, died after a gasoline fuel can exploded when a wick was lit. His older brother escaped by jumping into water. the child died at Mast hospital at 3:15 AM Wednesday August 17 1938. He leaves his parents Thelmar J and wife and siblings Billy and Mary Ann.
