Arago Boy Drowns In Mill Pond

Eight year old Lary LeRoy Bay, son of Mr and Mrs LeRoy Bay of Areosi, drowned in the McClellan Lumber mill pond near the Southern Pacific depot on Saturday afternoon while waiting for his father. Police Chief Richard Vines said the father called to him 13 minutes before quitting time. Graveside funeral services were held in Port Orford Tuesday.

Parade Draws Big Crowd in Myrtle Point Fair

Downtown Myrtle Point hosted the annual Coos County fair parade with 76 riders from the Saddle Club delivering a top class showing. Kids' section and numerous floats from clubs churches and organizations drew strong interest while a nine-baton bond line added festive color as veterans led the procession and Arnold Melbs acted as grand marshal.

McCarthy to Speak Boldly at GOP Rally on Sunday

Senator Joe McCarthy will headline a Union Picnic at Jantzen Beach, Portland, on Sunday with a tough stance on alleged government corruption. The event begins at 5 pm, barbecue at 1:30 pm, park admission ten cents, and full barbecue for adults at one dollar. Local organizers Graham Killam and Douglas Huegh oversee arrangements.

Lewis Southmayd Wins Scholarship to Oregon State College

Lewis Southmayd of Sitkum Oregon received a 150 dollar Agricultural Scholarship to Oregon State College funded by a Portland firm. The award honors worthy Oregon farm boys with character and scholarship, based on Future Farmers of America achievements and community activities. He served as FFA secretary for two years and plans dairy husbandry studies at college.

Lions Club Hosts Teen-Age Dance at Myrtle Point High

The Myrtle Point Lions club sponsors a free teen-age dance at the high school gym this Saturday August 25 from 8 30 to 11 30 p m. Ralph Southstone and his orchestra from Coquille provide the music with grant support from the A F M.

The 40th Coos County Fair drew large crowds over four days with perfect weather. Livestock and commercial exhibits thrived as 4-H groups from Twin Oaks, Greendell, Kentuck Dairy and others displayed entries. Leaders and clubs from Arago, Bridge, Sunny Hill showcased diverse exhibits, while preparations expanded the 4-H barn to accommodate growth.

The Cees County Fair featured rodeo events by local cowboys, amateur calf scramble winners from 4-H and Future Farmers of America, plus Grange talent, a Oaks pavilion dance, and Browning Bros carnival attracting large crowds. Bill Davenport Calf Tops 1951 Auction Sale Prices

The 1950 Scramble calf raised by Bill Davenport fetched the highest price at the 1951 auction. 4-H and Future Farmers of America youths competed, with prices averaging 36 cents per pound. Don Peterson of Arago weighed 933 pounds and Romauld Grant of Gaylord placed third with a 1950 calf. Mrs. John Warner was among buyers.
