Myrtle Point Lions at a Wednesday noon meeting voted to sponsor a booklet commemorating the 26th anniversary of the Cus County Fair. Merchants and businessmen pledged funds to cover costs. the publication will recount the fair history, organization, features, and active workers, plus a section on this year’s fair and entertainments.
About 300 attendees are expected for Safeway store 467 annual picnic at Bandon City Park on Sunday August 23. The event features potato salad prep by clerks, a shoeing contest, and baseball races with prizes. A beach wiener roast closes the day.
A Pioneer themed picnic promotion is planned for Sunday August 30 in the Mast Grove. Organizers invite the public to attend and join the event.
At an ice cream plant on the Coquille river, Phil lip McManamy and Leroy Swinney heard a boy shouting. McManamy raced toward the bridge while Swinney spotted Alvin Hickam 8, sinking for the third time. both men swam to aid him as the tide rose and mud hindered their search. The rescue succeeded despite loss of a purse of paper money found later.
The Myrtle Point Future Farmers of America chapter held a Sunday picnic in J Mo Wagner grove Broadbent. About 115 attendees enjoyed a morning ball game between boys and dads won 10 to 7, a large cafeteria style lunch, and afternoon water sports and horseshoe contests. Paul Breuer funded a watermelon judging contest with prizes. Hazel Trigg won by five pounds. Verlin Hermann Eldon Hermann and Martin Hufford led the entertainment committee.

Myrtle Point postoffice reports August 1 to 15 1836 as the busiest period for money orders with gains of about 6 percent over 1835 80 percent over 1834 and nearly 100 percent over 1929 The surge reflects higher payrolls from logging and larger dairy payments boosting buying power in the area.
Everett Arnett, 18, was arrested in Coquille for trespassing on improved land after reportedly peeling chittam bark. Justice J J Stan ordered release to Thursday. Luther Steeve, 32, was arrested in Bandon on a Wednesday for assault with a dangerous weapon, intoxicated and alleged to have brandished a gun at a party.
The Farmers picnic hosted by Pomona Grange and Coos County Dairymen's Association will be held in McCloskey grove at Norway on Sunday August 23. Roger Morse of Oregon State College will discuss dairying in Coos county and a state grange representative will cover key issues. The Corn Fed Canaries are billed for an appearance along with other music. A North Bayside Crawfish versus Norwegian Haymakers ball game is planned. All were invited to bring a lunch and eating utensils.
Rev W C Cronk local Methodist minister showcases dahlias in his gardens with two flowers measuring 10 and 12 inches across. He features Monmouth Champion and Fluffy Ruffles noting deep salmon and lighter ruffled blooms while crediting elimination of side shoots and ample water rather than fertilizer.
The Pension Club announces an Oldtime Dance to be held at a local venue. Members are invited to enjoy traditional tunes, socialize, and dress in period attire for the evening event.
Funeral services will be held for James Henry Ellis known as Silent Ellis at Schroeder Funeral Home Myrtle Point. The 83 year old plainsman and Indian scout died at the Coos County Fairgrounds after a cancer diagnosis eight years prior. Born May 17, 1840 in Missouri, Ellis roamed the Dakotas Wyoming and Montana on frontier missions and once performed a sharpshooters feat at 1700 paces during the 1873 Custer era. He later worked as government scout and guide and settled near Johnson Mill before becoming caretaker of the Coos County Fairgrounds. Surviving his widow Susan Ellis and several daughters across Oregon.
A 66 year old youngster Curties Buddy Baker caught an 18 pound chinook in the Coquille river near the north fork of the middle fork while fishing with his grandfather Ralph Rackleff. The fish proved heavy to haul into the boat so the grandfather shot it. Two days earlier the boy had landed a 6 pound salmon.
At the Tuesday Myrtle Grange meeting Master Frank Southmayd disclosed his trip to the state grange. Mr and Mrs W Lee Ray and Mr and Mrs George Hampton shared travel reports to Cleveland Ohio Topeka Kansas Texas and Missouri. Watermelon was served and the next meeting is September 15.

A community grange was organized at Gravelford last Thursday evening and the following officers were elected Master C M Benniksen overseer Paul Bunch lecturer Mrs Bruce Henry steward Roland Weekly assistant steward Vernon Bennett chaplain E L Culbertson treasurer Walter Schroeder secretary R L Griffin gate keeper Roy Swan Ceres Mrs C M Benniksen Pomona Mrs E L Culbertson Flora Mrs Severt Iverson and lady assistant steward Mrs Walter Schroeder. The newly organized body will meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at the community building. Henry Gustafson of North Bend will install the new officers at the next meeting.
George H Strader married Dorothy Stonelake in Coquille by Rev G A Gray at the Methodist parsonage. John Nelson wed Ina Buckingham of Marshfield at Emmanuel Episcopal church in Marshfield. Leo Hobelman and Lucille McClelland of Coquille wed at the Oerding home with Rev Winfield Smith. Harold Young and Lois Teters of McKinley filed for license. David Brown of Myrtle Point and Billie Lund of Coquille issued license. Glenn Wolff of Myrtle Point and Jonella Curtis of Bridge obtained license. Thomas Havens Jr of Marshfield and Ruby Cloake of Roseburg married.
