Local notes detail visits and trips including Republican picnic in Cutlip’s grove, Marshfield business, golf tournament travel to Portland, and relatives visiting from New York. Travelers mention Myrtle Creek, Seattle, and weekend excursions via new highway No. 88 with scenic views near Odell and the Minamette area.
Arthur R. Jones will take over The Herald Press and Myrtle Point Herald from Mrs. Agnes W. Tucker and the late Robert L. Tucker. The sale follows Mrs. Tucker's health issues and a May Alaska vacation as Barr Monrad remains in charge until completion. Jones, a local publisher, will assume Friday morning with staff Beers and Miss Dye retained.
West Myrtle Point guests at Mrs. Rachel McClellan's home included Mrs. Albert Shorb Levi Gant from Powers and Mrs. C Taylor of Port Orford. Mr and Mrs Paul Brewer traveled to Merrill near Klamath Falls to meet daughter Mrs Wayne Cook. Mr and Mrs Cook plan to move to Fort Lewis Washington where Cook will be stationed. The Brewers brought back their grandson Teddy Cook who will stay until his parents settle. Mr and Mrs Benny Daniels of Marshfield visited the Brewer home.
Mrs Myers guests included her brother in law and sitter Mr and Mrs Frank Lane on Tuesday and Wednesday last week. Dinner guests Friday were Mr and Mrs FE J Myers, with John Myers of Myrtle Point and Johnny Myers of Broadbent also present.
In Mérway the Ceps county Young Jone held an annual Sota and presentution of candidates for offices. J H McCuekey of Marway and Roy Carter of Gold Bench were introduced for state legislature. Charlie Sutherland seeks county judge, Charles Foreest for county assessor, M M Henderson for county commissioner. Social activities followed with softball and horseshoes.
Oregon State Highway commission representatives tour the coast starting Friday at the California line and will visit Coquille Myrtle Point and Powers on Sunday. Local leaders join the caravan to discuss oiling an 18 mile gravel stretch and invite residents to meet the commissioners Sunday afternoon.
Coos County Oregon news notes a meeting at Myrtle Point with hopes for the best fair ever on the Myrtle Point fairgrounds. Chijates Mathews of Brownin t company solicits ads for daily racing programs as Ervin L. Peterson county judge candidate addresses the board. Night shows may be staged near the grandstand Friday and Saturday if weather permits.
Local society notes list the Presbyterian Ladies Aid meeting at Mrs T C Sumerlin home on Wednesday. Other neighborhood events include a Catholic reception, a watermelon feed at Una Rabskab lodge, and a bridge club gathering hosted by Mrs Norman Halter with high score won by Mrs Rickard.
Father D J Kelly reports Myrtle Point's new Catholic church interior nears completion within a month. The plan includes chimes played by radio amplified system with a bell, expected to cost 288 dollars, demonstrated at the New York World's Fair. Public demonstration by Coos County Firemen’s Association at Myrtle Point grange hall Friday after potluck at 9 p m.
The last inter-city golf results show Coquille Valley Country Club and Roseburg tied 13 to 12 at the Norway course. Medalist was Theodore Clinton of Coquille Valley with 74.
The Townsend club will meet at the round church on Seventh and Maple streets with a report on the St Louis convention by Dr. O H Clarke. Special music and entertainments planned. Also on Sunday August 35 the Southwestern Oregon Townsend picnic and rally at the Myrtle Grove in Coquille. Speakers include Charles Wetterman and Walter Sumner with a basket dinner at noon. Open to the public. transportation arrangements are under way.
The Future Farmers of America chapter hosts its annual community picnic on Sunday at Broadbent featuring swimming games and a potluck lunch for all residents. Local organizers emphasize entertainment and social gathering for the town.
