Myrtle Point Herald reports on the Centennial Queen candidates Shirley Tobey Flaine Dunn Arlene Aasen Peggy Dayton and Iris Brower. The piece notes weight mixups and calls for community support to boost the contest for the Community Band.
The Far program lists no admission charge to fair grounds and outlines judging on Friday August 14 with a Grange Talent Show, calf auctions, and coronation at Oaks Pavilion. Coos County Fair adds 28 cages of wild life from major fairs including Pacific International and Oregon State fair. Highlight is 12 ounce “Snookum” the smallest living bear, shown by Mrs Howard King of Eugene along with a Kinkajou, baby lynx, badgers, prairie dogs, opposums, white falcon, pheasants and porcupines. Open air display behind the new grandstand lasts all three days, with no admission charge.
The Henry A. Schroeder furniture dealers float from Myrtle Point earned first prize in Coos Bay Tim beroo parade last Saturday. Spenny Ross and his mother Mrs. Cora Rose crafted the float over a year and a half and it will appear in the big fair parade here this Saturday.
Sunday evening at 8 oclock on August 16 the Latter Day Saints church at Myrtle Point will show the religious film The Conversion of Paul. The story offers challenge and inspiration and the public is invited to attend.
The Centennial queen selection occurs Friday evening with a button sale closing at 5 oclock. Spenny Ross will announce results on radio. The queen is crowned at 11 pm at the Oaks pavilion after the Grange Talent show. Saturday a parade at 10 30 am features the queen and court downtown Myrtle Point.
About 50 residents met at city hall in Myrtle Point to discuss a proposed public swimming pool. They unanimously favored pursuing the idea and formed a committee led by Mrs. Chester Weed to survey community interest and potential financing and labor contributions.
Dick Roush presents an antique window collection dominated by a Frank James six gun found with five notches on the handle, a Jefferson manuscript copy from 1861, and a Pearce coin collection with centennial pieces. The exhibit, at Sempert Henry Drug, pits the younger Roush against his father with items including guns swords knives phonographs and more old-time curiosities.
The Brodie Shingle Co. began constructing a new 45 by 90 foot concrete block building at 3rd and Maple streets Myrtle Point. Stanley Schragg supervises block laying. The one story structure should be finished in about five weeks and will house the Pacific Feed & Seed Co. now on Eighth Street.
The Myrtle Point Saddle Club invites all children in the parade next Saturday to receive a free ice cream cone at Richmaid Ice Cream store with a parade entry ticket. The note also promotes the Saddle Club Cowboy Breakfast at Myrtle Park from 7 to 11 a m on Sunday.
The Coos County 4-H Building dedication was held Saturday evening with a welcoming program led by County Agent George Jenkins. Mrs Walter Schroeder entertained and square dances followed, as Morris Jalo spoke on the build’s history and construction oversight by the Leaders Association.
Jalo praises community support for the 4-H Building at the county fair. Donations and labor from business firms such as Weyerhaeuser Timber and Cape Arago Lumber helped raise funds and build the display auditorium and dormitories. The project grew from 3900 to about 5000 dollars and now stands worth around 45000 dollars.
World class cowboys will perform at the Coos County Fair rodeo next Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Max Barbour Rodeo Co. stock, including Brahma bulls and roping calves, is in place at the fair grounds as exhibitors prepare to begin. Notables like Jack Sherman of Cheyenne Merle Hansen Deb Coffenhauer and Bill Linderman are listed among entrants aiming for national and world honors.
Final plans for the Myrtle Point fair parade set for Saturday at 10 36 am were approved Monday by the committee at Am Rouse Service. The parade will form on Maple and 8th for walking groups and on Maple for color guards and floats. Prizes total 250 dollars with divisions for children and best western garb.
The Post Office Department will begin mail delivery in Myrtle Point once all houses are numbered and equipped with mailboxes. Owners must place curb boxes on Harmony Heights and the Roseburg highway area, with City Recorder Nick Perkins guiding numbers. If owners do not comply, the city will assign numbers and install boxes at their expense before September 1.
Myrtle Point Coquille and Bandon Odd Fellows invite all members Rebekahs families and friends to a joint annual picnic at the McCloskey grove near Norway next Sunday. A potluck dinner starts at 12 30 with free coffee ice cream and pop.
