The Portland Weld meeting gathered 2000 delegates who cried over Europe while offering no aid to American orphans widows and families harmed by war. The focus was on European suffering and communism in Berlin, with no discussion of domestic relief.
Roy Withers of Peasles Oregon donated his horse judging fee from the Coos County Fair to the 4 H Building Fund. The fair board expresses gratitude for his generous support and praise for the 4 H clubs of Coos County.
A county fair calf scramble was won by a team of boys raising 488 pounds in prize calves. Names of sponsors and donors appear in the list, including Bank Myrtle Point Daedlelland Bullards, Crescent Bas Lumber, Evans Products Co, and Coquille Lions Club. The event drew strong support from local businesses and organizations across Myrtle Point, North Coos River and surrounding communities.
Am Roush as chairman and Ernest Linbart praise Coos county cooperation in staging the greatest parade in Myrtle Point. Ann Roush cites Powers businesses and residents supporting the 4 H Kits Brookers and Elves float. Other committee members include Mitch Myers and John Vuannoiee.
The Myrtle Point Active Club presents the Portland Journal Juniors show at the senior high school auditorium Tuesday evening August 25 starting at 8 o clock. Proceeds fund the club’s child welfare project and showcase state touring young entertainers from southern Coos and beyond.

Broadbent Grangers win first place at the Coos County Fair Talent Show with a skit depicting an Indian village. Ralph Gibbs narrates with a cast that includes Jimmie Johnsons, George Nelson, James Devereaux, Wanda Smith, Violet Miller, Ted Grier, and others. The piece features Indian kiddies and a second place entry by Sumner Orange led by Howard Hauschildt.
A lively lamb scramble drew cheers as young women demonstrated nerve and fighting spirit. The crowd enjoyed the spectacle though it lacked the roughness of the wall scramble, with several competitors leading their husky lambs from the arena. Continued on Page three.
The Myrtle Point Union High School daily confirms the 1953 54 term opens Monday August 31 with a staff training just before. The new list includes Ben Ash Betts Croisant Kenneth Crow Elsie Downing Robert Hoefs Alden Kittredge Anne Morton Howard Nichols Ray Neugart Kay Peterser Harry Sacket Lester Simons Norman York Dorothy Whitney Esther Liang Cecil Shelley and new hire Cecil Shelley brings Spanish as an elective. New students and those not registered in spring should register August 24 and 25.
Rev Robert Sink finishes his two year pastorate at the local Church of the Brethren with morning and evening services next Sunday. He will accept a new post at the Church of the Brethren in Raisin, California, and plans to move with Mrs Sink next week to begin their new work.
Coos County’s Centennial Fair drew record crowds and larger exhibits over three days with ideal weather. Harold Clarno and Ann Roush reported 13 186 paid admissions, plus about 700 exhibitor passes, on Friday Saturday and Sunday while admission-free Friday. The event featured top acts including Man Barcourt's performance, the Grange Talent Show, a parade, and the Brownings Carnival, making the 42nd annual fair memorable.
In the Coos County fair the Coquille Grange booth won first place earning the Bold trophy cup. Summer Grange was second and North Bass third. The overflow area housed displays from Myrtle Point Presbyterian Ladies’ Aid Arago Garden Club and others with a large wheel centerpiece and a life size Arthur Olsen painting.
County education officials announced a district wide start for Myrtle Point and nearby rural districts on August 31 with registration on August 28. Most non first class districts resume September 8 after summer college sessions end August 28. Preschool meetings for rural teachers occur September 4 in Coquille.
Al Bezosky of Gravel Ford visited Myrtle Point to praise this year’s Coos county fair and parade. He says he has attended every fair and parade for 31 years and found this year’s events far superior, calling the parade “a honey.”
