Five youths died and seven others were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Highway 08 near Roseburg Saturday. Both drivers were among the deceased, with investigators noting reckless driving as a factor. The crash occurred on a straight stretch of road as responders rushed to the scene.
Lawrence Hutchinson died Monday evening at 5 38 after a gasoline explosion. He lived in Myrtle Point for 19 years with wife Helen and daughter Linda. Survived by his parents H E Hutchinsen and wife and child, the family spoke from the Hutchinson Machine Shop. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 pm with Rev Wilmer A Briggs officiating and burial in the Norway cemetery. American Legion will guard graveside rites.
Oregon State Selective Service headquarters announced that local boards are receiving address changes and marital status updates from men registered under the 1940 Act but too old for the 1949 act. Colonel Francis W Mason said registrants born after August 10, 1922 remain of interest while Congress acts on age limits.
Private Richard Barklow of Myrtle Point and grandson of local residents is amid heavy fighting on the Southern front in Korea. A Marine unit crouched behind a 60 foot bluff while shelling raged, and Barklow said the moment tested him but that the fallen generation fought first and now it was his turn to fight. The hill was eventually taken by American forces.
Dispatches report 2669 Americans listed as casualties in Korea with varying counts of dead wounded and missing. Drew Pearson claimed to have seen a secret list reportedly showing 660 dead 2878 wounded and 3000 missing, though details are unclear.
Federal Judge George Marines revoked Bridges bail of 25000 and ordered immediate confinement after concerns over his communistic activities. Judge Harris, noted for firm action, seeks to curb Bridges in a high profile, controversial case.

Lions discussed talent show support and new committee appointments.
The Myrtle Point Saddle Club met July 28 at the Legion hall and planned a cowboy breakfast for August 27 and a children's parade segment at the Coos County Fair. President Billingsley formed committees for the breakfast and children's entries, promising prizes for the latter. many members attended.
Mrs Roy Appleton and her niece Gladys faced a break in by a man named Whitaker at their Appleton residence near the river. He broke in with a rock and threatened harm, claiming pursuers were after him. He fled toward the river as Ford Worsham and Bert Pickle assisted.
Fire that started in the boiler room of the Arago cheese factory last Saturday morning gutted the plant causing about 40000 pounds in losses with only partial insurance coverage. The blaze also destroyed business records stored in the safe on the second floor when the safe fell and its door sprang open.
Local friends report the death of six year old Judy Knox daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Knox who lived in Powers before moving to Yakima. The child died after her clothing caught fire from a candle while she sang with her grandmother. The accident occurred Monday and she died Thursday despite efforts to save her. She is survived by parents grandparents and two younger brothers.
A Herald visit to the Lassen dairy farm at Broadbent highlights a thriving garden with corn, beans, tomatoes, squash, carrots, and potatoes. Ed Roberts and Pat Donohue noted the farm’s hand cultivator in a spotless barn, while the owner welcomed the crew amid praise for a model rural operation.
The Powers Lions club presented the City of Powers with a new resuscitator at a Tuesday meeting. Don Stickney cited the project in memory of two boys who drowned. Mayor Harold Ross accepted, noting readiness to cope with emergencies. Funds totaled $907.45 to support the machine and future purchases. Fire department members trained in its use and present at the event. Myrtle Point Lien representatives attended.
