Airliner Dodges Collision Over West Texas Incident

On July 23 a four engine Constellation traveling from Tucson to Chicago faced an in-flight scare when the pilot dodged what appeared to be another aircraft’s running lights. Thirty four passengers were jolted with one woman injured. Crew and belted passengers largely escaped harm.

The Myrtle Point Saddle Club and guests met at Daniels Grove on Powers road Friday evening for the annual picnic. They swam in the river, enjoyed a combined picnic supper and wiener roast, then discussed future plans and activities for the year.

Pacific Power Work Advances Eden Ridge Core Drill

Pacific Power and Light has one more phase of Eden Ridge core drilling to finish this week near the Coquille River south fork. Geologists and engineers will study results to assess hydroelectric potential and feasibility of a coal fueled plant, with permits in place from state and federal commissions.

Agness Area Needs Road to Powers, Says Don Lucas

Don Lucas president of the Agness Community Council spoke at the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce. He described Agness as the most isolated spot in the nation due to no telephone or electric service and urged building a market road to Powers and marketing centers in southern Coos County.

A Herald reporter meets Hardee Walton Mast 85 at a Lee Valley picnic. Mast, among Coos County's earliest pioneers, recalls moving from Roseburg after birth near there. His Lee Valley farm, once bought for a $20 gold piece by his grandfather, is now valued over $100,000. Continued on Page Two.

Plane Wreck Near Powers Involves Molalla Dealer

Loren Haley of Haley and Haley Molalla Oregon truck ing franchise owner wrecked his Cessna Sunday at 2 p.m. He and his wife were uninjured. The improvised runway caused the plane to fail to stop. a sapling was knocked down. Accident happened opposite Don Cunningham home on the Powers road to the Siskiyou National Forest. Plane disassembled and sent to Portland for repairs.

Higgins Named Manager of Coos County Chamber

Rev L Higgins was officially approved as manager of the Coos County Chamber of Commerce by the board in Coos Bay. He will begin active duties September 1, leaving the North Bend Chamber where Dr Robert Kiever noted the move would benefit the entire county.

The Coos County Fair Board led by Sam Dement held its final pre fair meeting at Anglers Cafe and Lounge with 32 attendees including all exhibit department heads. Officials voiced optimism for the 46th annual fair opening next Wednesday with entry day for exhibits and the event running through Sunday.

Rogue Boat Race at Agness Draws Northwest Contestants

The Rogue Boat Race at Agness on Sunday brings entrants from Kalamath Granta Pase Powers Theisen and Gold Beach to test endurance over six miles round trip. The event follows the crowning of the queen and a log sawing contest with prizes including 500 dollars and a General's trophy. Admission to the full barbecue and show is 1 95 for adults, 78 cents for 6 to 14, with under 6 free.

The Coos County Fair Bread Baking Contest winner's cup donated by Evans Dairy was shown in Breuer's Shoe and Clothing window after Ben Daniels of the same store dressed the window first. Daniels also announced a donation of a lady's Western Shirt to the Queen.

Coos County Fair Parade Route Plans Detailed

The Coos County Showcase Fair Parade in Myrtlewood County will be the fourth annual event. Mrs Dick McCuskey supervises the parade with a new formation from Maple and C streets in front of Maple Primary. Fraternal floats form on C street facing Maple while commercial floats go east on Maryland avenue past the school building to Form on Both facing C street. Horse riders meet at the Scout building block facing Maple to join on Willow street. A map will be displayed in the Heras window for full details. Children have a shorter route.

Porter Bill in Congress Aims Rogue River Basin Development

Washington July 31 Special Representative Charles O Porter filed a bill to authorize all Rogue River Basin structures. The measure seeks joint development by the Army and Reclamation Service with forest protection and Agriculture input. It authorizes about 65.6 million dollars plus adjustments for cost changes.
