Opposition to a Federal Electric Bank Proposal
The Rural Electrification Act expanded rural electric service but a proposed Federal Electric Bank is seen as unnecessary and fiscally unsafe. It would start with a $1 billion nest egg, borrow up to $10 billion from the public, and access Treasury funds without limit if payments falter. Loans could bypass Congress rules, threatening investor-owned utilities serving about 80 percent of customers with a $2.9 billion tax bill.
