Smaller cities face higher insurance costs in 1976 77

Myrtle Point Coquille and Powers see their budgets hit by liability insurance rates jumping to about four times last year. Coquille's rate rose from 6000 to 25000 with a 5000 deductible. Powers and Myrtle Point insured as well. Cities weigh options including budget adjustments self insurance or delaying elections as they scramble to cover added costs.

District Board Denies Grievance Linked to Nonrenewal Hearing

The Herald reports the district moved to deny the grievance at a Monday evening meeting while keeping the scheduled nonrenewal hearing for Wednesday. Bennett warned that delaying until late May would hinder witnesses. The board accepted Cathy Smith’s resignation as home economics teacher. The school sold two buses for 450 and 501 after three bids. Only one bid was received to demolish three houses. 1000 was sought for all. The baseball field will be improved after this year’s Coos County Fair with semi portable dugouts and a temporary fence. Myrtle Crest will not offer eighth grade Spanish next year due to scheduling conflicts with teacher Sue Hodges.
