Spires Named Harbor Commissioner for Los Angeles

Dr Elton C Spires of San Pedro California longtime Myrtle Point native was appointed to the Los Angeles Harbor Commission by Mayor Norris Poulson to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Albert Pegg. The 56 year old dentist has led the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce and held Optimist International posts. His term expires July 1 1955. He and his wife Helen reside at 1149 Elberon Avenue San Pedro.

Bill Head Returns to Work After Year in Portland Hospital

Bill Head district manager of Mountain States Power Co. is back in Coquille after almost a year in the Portland Veterans hospital. He will resume duties after May first while taking it easy for a period. Walter Asplund, general manager of Cous Hay, visited Myrtle Point and plans to retire October 1. Asplund, a 38 year Mountain States employee, is a Coos County native.

Seventy-Two Seniors Graduate from Myrtle Point Union High

Commencement exercises for seventy two seniors will be held at Myrtle Point Union High School on May 26 at 8:00 p m. It is the largest class in the school's history. Robert Stevens will give the Valedictory and Carol Porter the Salutatorian. Dr Roy McCall from the University of Oregon will deliver the commencement address.

Budget Com and H S Board Consider Expenses

Union High School board and budget committee met April 21 at the high school for a special budget and school board session. Members approved presenting a district budget exceeding the 6 percent limit but with a 16.9 mill county levy. May 20 is set for a vote on annexing Aldercrest into Union High for high school use. Aldercrest pupils already attend Myrtle Point Union High on tuition.

Curriculum at Myrtle Point High Gains National Attention

A committee including school board members and parents organized last summer to study adding a senior level program focusing on personality development problem solving and social skills. Dr Bent and Superintendent Goddard proposed expanding the course to Myrtle Point High next year with Coquille High possibly joining to align Dr Schulz’s weekly visits for two senior classes.

Recreation camp set for 4-H leaders at Chatcolab

Coos County Apr 26 Walter Coens extension agent announces May 12 as the Chatco lab Recreation training camp for Northwest 4-H and church group leaders. The program features square dancing song and games at the Chatco lab site about 30 miles south of Coeur d Alene with a focus on fun and fellowship.
