A national debate pits un American activities committee critics against Senator Joe McCarthy. A Sauk City editor launches a Joe Must Go recall, needing 400 000 signatures, but Wisconsin press largely backs McCarthy. The dispute continues on page two.

The Security Bank in Myrtle Point installs a National Cash Register proof machine to balance checks deposits and credit memos. The machine runs twenty different totals from morning to close and speeds calculations, promising faster service and less error.
The Community Concert Association reports ticket demand at capacity for the first 1954-55 show, with a wait list. Plans call for Robert Shaw Choral in October, Luboschutz and Nemenoff piano duo in January, Elene Nikolaiadi in February, and George London in April, subject to New York office confirmation. Myrtle Point rep Mrs. Robert Powrie chairs membership mailings. Mrs. Carl Larson handles publicity.
Mrs. W. Winston will discuss Women's Triple Role at the 11th annual Homemakers Festival in Coquille on May 8. She will address more than 400 home extension women and share Shakespearean themes about women's roles, drawn from her career as registrar and dean of women.
Dr Elton C Spires of San Pedro California longtime Myrtle Point native was appointed to the Los Angeles Harbor Commission by Mayor Norris Poulson to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Albert Pegg. The 56 year old dentist has led the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce and held Optimist International posts. His term expires July 1 1955. He and his wife Helen reside at 1149 Elberon Avenue San Pedro.
A local boy named Ocheltree was injured in a car accident on Thursday and is recuperating at home. The incident caused facial injuries and damage to several teeth. details about other injuries remain unclear.
The two act romp set in a Newport hotel of the gay nineties drew strong praise for its 27 voice chorus and soloists Gart Fleckenstein Wanda Sanford Diane Owens and Daisy McCain. costumes and lively dramatic numbers kept the audience enthralled as encores followed the final curtain.
Bill Head district manager of Mountain States Power Co. is back in Coquille after almost a year in the Portland Veterans hospital. He will resume duties after May first while taking it easy for a period. Walter Asplund, general manager of Cous Hay, visited Myrtle Point and plans to retire October 1. Asplund, a 38 year Mountain States employee, is a Coos County native.
Commencement exercises for seventy two seniors will be held at Myrtle Point Union High School on May 26 at 8:00 p m. It is the largest class in the school's history. Robert Stevens will give the Valedictory and Carol Porter the Salutatorian. Dr Roy McCall from the University of Oregon will deliver the commencement address.
Union High School board and budget committee met April 21 at the high school for a special budget and school board session. Members approved presenting a district budget exceeding the 6 percent limit but with a 16.9 mill county levy. May 20 is set for a vote on annexing Aldercrest into Union High for high school use. Aldercrest pupils already attend Myrtle Point Union High on tuition.
A committee including school board members and parents organized last summer to study adding a senior level program focusing on personality development problem solving and social skills. Dr Bent and Superintendent Goddard proposed expanding the course to Myrtle Point High next year with Coquille High possibly joining to align Dr Schulz’s weekly visits for two senior classes.
Coos County Apr 26 Walter Coens extension agent announces May 12 as the Chatco lab Recreation training camp for Northwest 4-H and church group leaders. The program features square dancing song and games at the Chatco lab site about 30 miles south of Coeur d Alene with a focus on fun and fellowship.
