Esther Hall Retires as Myrtle Point Society Editor

Esther Hall ends a 19 year stint as society editor at the Myrtle Point Herald. She and her late husband Floyd moved to Myrtle Point from Canby to join the newspaper community.

Mrs Wells Resigns As Librarian

Mrs Loyd Wells city librarian will leave July 1 to move to Medford where she has accepted a library post there. She has served Flora Mr Laird Memorial Library for seven years succeeding Vern Shields and will teach woodshop and metal shop to freshmen and sophomores at the Medford high school. Application blanks for the library job may be obtained from Mrs Wells with a May 17 deadline for an upcoming librarians meeting in Coos Bay. In October 1943 Henry Hall era notes show the Halls expanding Myrtle Point Herald holdings with Canby Toledo Medford and Buhl papers. Mrs Hall plans to return to Canby soon. Temporary society editor Mrs Clare Lehmanowsky fills in until Mrs Art Motz starts.

Senior Citizens Organize Myrtle Point Area Group

Senior citizens of Myrtle Point and nearby areas plan a community program at St Ann and Michael's Hall on Friday from 1 00 to 3 00 p m. They seek involvement from other churches and service groups to form a board and promote the senior citizens program while seeking a permanent center.

Ashbee Elected Proxy of Mental Health Assoc

The newly formed South Coast chapter elected officers for one year at an April 13 meeting led by Gordon Ashbee as president Myrtle Point DF Tankersls as vice president and Mrs Vernon Sorenson as secretary North Bend. Directors from Coos Bay to Myrtle Point were chosen with Harold Bibeau present for orientation. The group plans Mental Health Week and a May 20 public meeting at the IWA Hall North Bend to discuss local mental health issues and recruit volunteers and members.

Services Held Saturday For Mrs Johnnie Davis

Funeral services were held Saturday April 22 at Myrtle Point Funeral Home for Mrs Johnnie Davis a longtime area resident. She was born January 31 1910 in Oklahoma and died April 18 at her Myrtle Point home. Survivors include two sons Franklin Smith of Myrtle Point and Robert Townsend of Red Bluff California a brother William Mill of Gerbes California another brother Thelmer Miller of Weed California and a sister Mrs Allie Price. Rev Harold Backlund officiated and interment followed at Norway Cemetery.

Koch Receives Army Commendation Medal for Vietnam Service

Army Sp. Stephen L Koch, back from a year in Vietnam, is stationed at Fort Eustis Virginia with the 50th Military Police Company. He earned the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service from March 1966 to March 1967 with the 272d Police Company. He also received a certificate of service with the Fighting Deuce. A Myrtle Point High School 1964 graduate, he entered the Army in October 1965.

Gordon Hayes High Bidder For Powers Timber Sale

Gordon Hayes of Gaylord was the high bidder for the Magnus Bonus salvage timber sale on the Powers Ranger District. About 100000 board feet were offered including 75000 board feet of Douglas fir and other conifers at 30.80 and 25000 board feet of Port Orford cedar at 142.45. Total appraised value 5871.25, total bid 11667.50. Other bidders present were Donald Slater Dennis Lee Davis and W R Merchant. The sale is one of fourteen unre gulated sales for 1967 plus regular area output under the Multiple Use Management Plan. The Powers District has sold double the planned volume from 1960 to 1966 largely due to the 1962 storm Blowdown.

School Budget Election Set For This Monday

Voters in district 41 vote May 1 on a 1.24 million dollar budget for the next year, up 43 thousand from last year and raising millage by about 4 mills. Two board members and unit committees will be elected. Polling at Myrtle Crest Broadbent Bridge Arago and Dora schools from 2 to 8 p.m.

Local Girls To Attend 1967 Oregon Girls State

Carol Gassman and Carol Brister chosen for the 26th Oregon Girls State session. Oregon also names Dr Fernando Leon honorary consular rep in Portland effective April 1. He is a thoracic surgeon at Providence Hospital and will run consular duties from his office.

Former MP Man Awarded Belated War Medals

Myrtle Point native Eugene E. Laird, a former attorney now in Salem, received belated recognition for his World War I defense of the Philippine Islands. The Philippine Defense Medal and Presidential Unit Citations were awarded this month, adding to earlier Silver Star and Purple Heart honors. He endured over three years in Japanese prisoner camps until release in September 1948.

Cancer Drive In Progress Led By Mrs Schroeder

Local chairman Mrs Elton Schroeder announces the 1967 American Cancer Society drive is underway for several weeks Volunteers will canvass the city to solicit donations. They will wear name tags and distribute literature on cancer warning signals Funds support research saving over 1.4 million American lives. Memorial contributions may be mailed to ACS during the year.

Erwin R. Wilberger, mayor, urges citizens, schools, organizations and businesses to display the flag and participate in patriotic activities on Loyalty Day May 1, aligning with national and state leaders to counter subversion and strengthen American unity. The proclamation is issued in Myrtle Point by the city’s chief executive.
