Juniors and Seniors of Myrtle Point school and their guests danced Friday evening until midnight, marking the annual junior prom. The event closed with the curtain falling as students enjoyed the celebration.
Charles Bingham, a popular Myrtle Point High School student, was elected Student Body president for next year by student vote. He will be a senior and is on the honor roll. Bill Brooks won the vice presidency with Karen Barklow as treasurer Phyllis Shelton as secretary and Harrison Bryant as secretary.
The Myrtle Point Woman's club hosted the Southwestern District Conference of Business and Professional Women's clubs on Sunday April 16. About 100 delegates from 12 Southwest Oregon towns attended at the high school library. State officers present included Charlene Edwards Florence Barton Cecelia Galey Natalie Burns Melon Chase Betty Eliedecon and Dr Eleanor Gutman who presided over the morning session. Edna Berg Marie Hughes Lee Lamb Laelia Chase Lavada Crawford and Mrs J M Myers reported on the year's work with others present such as Mrs Ann Connelly and Mrs Mary Cra.
Mayor J. M. Myers designates April as Cancer Control Month to support the American Cancer Society and its campaign for cancer research and awareness in Myrtle Point. The proclamation urges community backing for the Society's annual drive and related efforts.
Myrtle Point Sportsmen's club announces guest speaker Stanley G. Jewett of Portland will address members at the Grange hall banquet Saturday evening April 28 at 7 30. At Mast hospital in the past week, three boys and six girls were recorded among new arrivals. Cited residences include Coquille Myrtle Point and nearby areas with arrivals dated from April 10 to April 17, 1950, noting multiple families and newborns.
Myrtle Point Active club members worked all day Sunday at Myrtlewood park preparing a new kiddies playground. About 40 truckloads of dirt were moved from the school site to the park with help from Coos Bay Lumber Co and Coos Transportation Co. The project includes a merry go round slide two teeter totters giant strides and four swings.
Coos county Granges endorse a August fair on standard time rather than daylight saving. They urge the state Grange to sponsor meetings in Oregon cities to explain daylight saving drawbacks to farmers before the fall election. Coquille Grange backs a 4 lane highway from Chrome Plant to Coquille. Klondike Grange in Sherman county favors balanced representation in Oregon.
Mr and Mrs Norwood Browne proprietors of the Myrtle Hotel Coffee Shop announce the installation of a York ice cube machine. The thermostatically controlled device makes 8000 cubes daily and is designed for enhanced cooling capacity for customers.
More than 100 Old-timers in Southern Coos county gathered for the annual Pioneer Day celebration in Myrtle Point hosted by the Myrtle Point Women’s Club. The program featured music by Arlene Evans and others, a gay 90s style revue, and a reminiscence segment led by Emil Peterson that recalled amusing days of yesteryear.
Residents of the New School Area petition Myrtle Point city council seeking new adequate sewers. They pledge to pay their share and warn unsanitary conditions threaten student health. Daylight saving time to begin at midnight with statewide county cooperation.

Myrtle Point school musicians under Arnold Melby will have a major part in the two day Southweet Cree Muale Festival at North Bend Friday and Saturday. The band of 35 players will present many solos and receive judges including Vid L Preston and Milton Dietrich. Myrtle Point students Arlene Aasen Evelyn Mast Carroll Porter Lynn Schroeder Trene Thompson William Lobdell are among those selected for solos.
Next Tuesday evening at 8 00 oclock the 47 piece University of Oregon concert band will perform in Begh auditorium under the direction of a noted leader. Local authorities expect strong attendance with a modest 1.00 admission for adults and 0c a student for tickets. The event cost about 150 to bring the band and leader to town.
