Elton Mayse and his wife Ardis of Arago survived a forced, rough desert landing in a Cherokee private plane after fuel and tower clearance issues near Reno. A deputy sheriff aided as a 20 mile run to Highway 40 to summon help amid 6,700 foot sage country and snow patches.
Myrtle Point Garden Club begins a civic project for Richfield Oil Company sponsorship planting native shrubs currants rhododendrons azaleas and bulbs in a 216 foot long by 75 to 207 foot wide island on Highway 42 between the new and old routes near the North Fork bridge. The Highway Department permits ongoing planting and maintenance as plowing starts. The club aims for district awards from the Oregon Federation of Garden Clubs.
Myrtle Point PTA plans an 8 p m May 1 panel with four school board members and the budget committee. John Kirk will detail 1962 63 estimates and answer questions. PTA voting on sponsorship and new officer installation follows a social hour with performances by Myrtle Crest School choirs.
The United States Treasury launches a two month Freedom Bond Drive starting May 1, aiming to boost savings and ocean stability. Oregon director George W Minnough urges a payroll deduction plan, noting nearly half bonds sales come from salary deductions and Americans hold over 4 billion in existing Series E and H bonds.
In District 41 six year olds born on or before November 15, 1962 may enroll for the next school year and should register May 1 for first grade. Maples, Sitkum, Arago, and Myrtle Point schools will host registration with a 12 30 visitation at Maple primary. Bring birth certificate or birth evidence.
Three filings for District 41 positions 5 and 6 follow the resignation of Ralph Whitaker. Doris Belloni seeks continuation of the unexpired term, while Robert Sewart and Broadbent Robert Thompson also file. statements emphasize budgeting, planning, and civic service.
Voters owning ten acres or more in Coos county will vote on April 28 from 1 to 8 pm to establish a county wide Soil Conservation district. Polls are at the county extension office in Coquille courthouse and at Glasgow North Bayside Grange hall. Absentee ballots available from E L Detlefsen in Coquille or via the county extension office with ballots returned by 5 pm April 3. Voters also choose three supervisors from five listed or nominate other eligible candidates.
Five hundred young voices from Myrtle Point and neighboring districts join choral groups from Reedsport North Bend Coquille Powers Bandon Port Orford Gold Beach Brookings and Oregon State University Chorale at the high school gym for the Southwestern Oregon music festival. Soloists include Jeanie King Bobby Castro and Richard Barthey with ensembles and the final grand Onward Christian Soldiers featuring organ and trumpet. Admission is 1 for adults and 50 cents for students.
Marshall Stuart Hubbard 86 of 701 North Beréh Coquille was hurt through the windshield with deep cuts. The extent of his injuries is unknown. Turner and Firbberd are at Mast Hospital in Myrtle Point.
Juanita Rae Griffin daughter of Mr and Mrs E M Griffin one of seven semi finalists for Miss Portland. The 19 year old is a Myrtle Point high school graduate and University of Oregon attendee. She will compete May 17 at the Portland Civic Theater for Miss Portland and later Miss Oregon at Seaside July 19.
Television Systems, Inc. announces five channels plus FM will be available in Myrtle Point and Powers by month end. KCBY Channel 11 and KATU Channel 2 will be added, Channel 6 moves from Myrtle Point to resolve duplication with Channel 8, with KATU providing a Portland channel.
Mrs Elden Brodie urged a large turnout Friday at 9 30 am for a Governor Hatfield coffee hour at the Coquille hotel to demonstrate unity for Highway 42. Housewives for 42 seek broad community support with men encouraged to attend alongside women.
