Report from the dedication day features a large turnout with dignitaries from across the state. Mrs Mark O Hatfield and another guest share identical hats in a humorous moment while Governor Sprague greets guests, delivering plainspoken remarks and a moving colors ceremony.
Governor Mark O. Hatfield spoke to about 100 housewives in Coquille despite heavy rain. He recalled a promised Highway 42 plan, noted three and a half million dollars for the contract from Remote to the Middle Fork, and urged caution on borrowing millions and diverting highway funds to general use.
Myrtle Point Womans Club Pioneer Day honored longtime residents and couples recalling Spruce Street memories. Senior member Carrie Benham aged 92 and Hattie Hatcher aged 90 led a lively reminiscence with a focus on past travel by wagon and local hospitality. The gathering highlighted the Laird and Keating families and reflected community ties through a program of skits, songs, and committee work.
Myrtle Point PTA votes unanimously to place the District 41 budget on the May 7 ballot. The tax proposal seeks 087,006.63 for district operations beyond the 6 percent constitutional levy. Zone 4 lists Broadbent and Thompson vying for school board. Jones 5 and 6 show Cowset and Doris Belloni contesting a four year term.
Stop and Shop Day invites shoppers to be in participating stores this Saturday at 2 p.m. Names placed in a basket may win $100.
Community immunization drive titled Operation Swallow aims to vaccinate Myrtle Point and Powers residents against all three polio types. Clinics open May 6 and June 3 from 11 am to 6 pm at Myrtle Crest School and Powers high school auditorium with free, needle free Sabin oral doses and optional Salk booster.
Centennial Follies brings a staged history of Myrtle Point for an 8 p.m. Friday program at the high school. The show includes a century of events and scenes such as a stage hold up and a fire, presented under Mrs C R Lemanowsky and Mrs Rolland Leep. Funds go to warm-up jackets for the wrestling team with admission 1.00 for adults, 0.78 for students, and 0.50 for children. County roads planning meeting set for May 8 at 10 a.m. chaired by Geany Barklow and Mahaffy to discuss Coos County roads and the serial tax levy.
The three year old green bungalow of Mr and Mrs Ben Hatfield burned to the ground at 7 10 p m Monday. Neighbors say the house was unoccupied for ten minutes before the blaze took hold. The two bed room home by the river at Sugar Loaf was destroyed in half an hour with no contents saved and insurance coverage noted.
Monday voters will choose four directors to guide Southwestern Oregon College. From seven candidates, the top two will serve four and three year terms respectively. Eligible names include Lawrence Burns Merry H Byrer Ben Chandler Jr Fred Eason Kari Gehiert Beatty Lay Harry H Byrer and others. Adems vs Naneen Orville R Adame Reedsport has served one term and is up for reelection. Elva H Hansen also listed.
South Western Oregon College was officially dedicated Thursday April 26 in temporary quarters near the North Bend airport. Governor Mark O Hatfield and state education officials attended as the 761st radar squadron color guard posted the colors. Rev A Robert Chidwick gave the invocation and benediction. a reception followed for the governor and Mrs Hatfield and college leaders and board members.
