Myrtle Point gearing up for Easter with Sunrise Services at 6 30 a m at the Fair Grounds. Inter church fellowship reports expect record attendance as ministers, choirs and families prepare meals, flowers, eggs and gifts. Some baptisms planned and details listed elsewhere in The Herald.
Easter Sunday at 1 p.m. invites all children to Rotary Park for a Lions Club egg hunt. Bright eggs hidden in the grass, with gold and silver prizes for finders. Photographers and out of town guests expected amid holiday dinners and spring fashions on display.
Mrs. Lloyd Eggers appeals for volunteers to sell lilies and corsages Saturday to aid Camp Easter Seal for crippled children. If unavailable, donations of cooking utensils bed frames springs refrigerators dishes and silverware may be phoned to Marge Myers. The piece also previews a forthcoming Herald story on Remote settler life and the Highway 42 controversy.
The Board of Directors of Southwestern Oregon Area Education District invites attendance at a dedicatory ceremony on Thursday afternoon April 26 at 2 30 in the college gymnasium North Bend Oregon. A reception follows.
Governor Mark O Hatfield proclaims bell ringing from 10 to 10 04 a m in Myrtle Point and Oregon to express unity and love of liberty among Americans across the states. A four minute toll echoes as a public symbol of shared values nationwide.
Mr and Mrs M Bartee of Arizona purchased 160 acres from Elmer Davis at Broadbent and moved to Myrtle Point to enjoy mild climate. They settled on their new property in a trailer and plan to build a house on the quarter section soon.
Political candidates from both parties will speak at a no host banquet on April 26 at 7 pm at the Courtel Coos Bay with a 630 social hour. Tickets are 250 a plate and reservations are required. Governor Mark Hatfield will attend the dinner and a coffee social will follow for those unable to attend. Sponsored by Weyerhauser Company Political Education Conference.
On Good Friday April 20, Myrtle Point churches host a 12 noon to 3 pm series of six half hour devotional sessions at the Presbyterian church. Min isterial association leaders lead meditations on Personalities Around the Cross with themes from five local pastors and one host church pastor. Worshippers may enter or leave between sessions and are welcomed to participate in hymns and choir singing as they reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus.
Walter Barklow pulls out of the race for Coos County Board of Commissioners after filing for re election leaving eight candidates remaining. Barklow states voters should not cast a ballot for him and says he will complete his term and focus on duties as commissioner. Local candidates include Democrats Forrest Laird Lentz Mahaffy Payton Sutton and Republicans Liliebo Triplett with Sheriff Strawn seeking re election.
An exhibit on chromatography earned Pat Dooley a first prize in the senior division of last week's science fair. Richie Dayton won a first for his muscles project. Junior division winners included Joe Rankin Bridge eggs Judy Brown Marsha Huntley Bridge lungs Kathy Winkelman Bridge warmth of color Dennis Waterman Bridge microscope. The Myrtle hotel banquet room hosts a coffee hour Thursday April 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. for State Senator Robert W Straub a Lane County rancher and lawyer running for Congress from the 4th district. County candidates are invited to attend so Myrtle Point voters can meet them in person.
Pioneers of the area will be honored at the annual Pioneer Day celebration to be held next Wednesday April 25 at the First Presbyterian Church at 1 30 pm.
Coquille Valley Golf officers for both the women and men were installed Wednesday with Jack Sturza as toastmaster. Bud Meek of Coquille was installed as president, Dr Robast Ley as vice president, and Mrs Roy Stein of Coquille and Mrs Deke Ranta of Powers as women’s officers. Free golf lessons for women were announced by Ray Whiteside starting at 10 o'clock each Thursday. A full slate of tournaments and committees was named, with events scheduled from April 28 through September 30, including the Spring Handicap and Coos Curry Championship, as Fritz Barklow praised the course condition and Myrtlewood decorations.
The Coos Bay chamber discussed a 350 acre Bay Park site for a regional college proposed by county surveyor Jack E. La Flamm. They weighed water supply, size versus Empire site, and accessibility for Myrtle Point and south end communities.
Governor Mark Hatfield will speak on Highway 42 at a Coquille hotel coffee hour on Friday April 27 from 9 30 to 10 30 a m under Housewives for 42. He will discuss the highway program and attendees may meet him after his talk urging all citizens to attend.
Twenty five service and charitable agencies join a single annual appeal to reduce waste and costs. Myrtle Point chair Bob Cowart and division chairs Art Henry Joe Avina Dave Dillon Ben Nichols Dr. Aaron Novick lead drives with no door to door solicitation. Funds support homeless and neglected children with administrative costs kept low. local outreach focuses on business districts. United Good Neighbors week is proclaimed by Myrtle Point Mayor Ross Pinkley for April 23 to 28.
Cub Pack 99 and Pack 98 will hold their annual feet pack meeting on Tuesday April 34 at 7 30 in the Myrthe Crest School gym. The Herpes Wood derby will be held and Webelos graduation will take place.
Local churches announce Easter Sunday services inviting Myrtle Point residents to worship. The plan includes special music and a baptismal part with Rev. John Wood delivering the sermon titled Master Dawns and a baptismal rite for participating children.
The Coos County Fair board advances a major building program with a new 110 by 156 foot stock exhibit barn nearing completion. Dow-Conn Construction of North Bend was the winning bidder. Remodeling converts beef and old exhibit buildings into floral and culinary spots while the beef barn becomes chicken and rabbit exhibits. Project cost is about 36600 dollars. Changes to the fair book are planned, with the premium list to be published early. Northbay and Sumner Granges, 1961 community booth winners, will take booths to the State Fair.
Preliminary suggestions for the Coonmounty fair indicate no final selection yet. Names bandied about include Duke Davenport and Fred Gross with Jon Roblaser, John Rether, Am ee Fred Gross and J. M. Clar.
