A new dress shop opened Wednesday morning in the Thompson building Myrtle Point under the management of Mrs D D Sutphin and Mrs Dorothy Hauser. The sisters renovated what was once the Dillard market into a neat organized space filled with floral bouquets from local businesses.
Representatives of Coos County Chamber of Commerce met in Bandon to hear talks on harbor improvements. The $345000 federal jetty project will rebuild the north jetty west of the lighthouse and extend it seaward to ease sand drift, with a dredge planned to open the channel for ocean ships.

A Union High School group led by agricultural instructor Harold Schaad left Wednesday morning for Corvallis to attend the state FFA convention. Participants include Frank Trigg Kenneth Anderson Kenneth Benniksen Jack Ellis Dean Weekly Dean Epperton Dean Heistand and Edward Morrison. Trigg and Anderson aim for the state FFA degree, while Ellis will play in the FFA band.
Fifty three delegates from nine clubs attended the seventh annual Junior Woman's club convention in Myrtle Point. Mrs Herold D Peterson of Dallas addressed anti un American activities and Canada visits. New officers for District No 2 were elected and North Lincoln and Lebanon clubs joined the district.
The county tally of the Methodist League of Young People will be held at the Myrtle Point Methodist church Sunday from 3 00 to 8 00. Attending will be Young People from Marshfield North Bend Coquille and Myrtle Point. Arthur R Jones publisher of The Herald will speak on Young Folks Are Interested in Religion. The program includes registration games skits supper and a devotional service.
A Myrtle Point committee led by Mrs Hugh T Mitchellmore announces National Music Week events. A Sunday service at the Presbyterian church features church choirs and Rev F H Barr speaking. Monday offers a community concert at the high school with more details to follow in the Herald.
Union High wins the Coquille relay meet scoring 37 points as Myrtle Point dominates events. Bandon places second in several relays with Coquille third, while Marshfield and North Bend send no entries. Notable marks include Jim Porter 5 ft 9 in high jump and Leo Paulson 38 ft 2 in shot put.
Union High School hosts its annual tea and style show in the gym to showcase clothes made by girls this year. Miss Margaret Davis presides as new officers are installed, with Mrs Alfred Strong and Miss Kathryn Zumwalt delivering style nous.

Thirty six Myrtle Point players and director Fred Dallas traveled to Marshfield and anticipate a coast regional contest in Tacoma if they enter. Medford High band won first in 3B class, with Marshfield and Grants Pass challenging for second.

The model three foot long Constitution replica built by Clair Floyd of Bandon draws crowds in Werald window. Floyd spent three years carving from a jack knife and now Melvin Floyd of Myrtle owns the craft. The ship’s fame evokes United States naval history with 1788 launch and World War actions. In Charleston Massachusetts Navy Yard it serves as a stationary museum. Also, Mr and Mrs Harry Stevens moved to Reedsport to join Albertson’s logging camp.
Mayor Jesse Clinton urged citizens to keep Oregon top in traffic safety after the state won first place in the National Safety Council 1940 contest. He stressed continued careful driving and walking through the year to maintain the move into 1941 as a leading record in traffic safety.
