A Western Auto store has been sold to Mr and Mrs Winningham. The new owners plan a grand opening and will relocate after the Grants Pass area closing date. Family moves and housing arrangements are noted as part of the transition.
Report by Mrs. James Gamwell Brierley notes neighbors recalling an elderly storekeeper at the Beach Reof. The scene centers on a delay in deliveries and the delays affecting local residents.
Robinson reports a state highway engineer warns housing for workers is nearly impossible in Myrtle Point. The Chamber discusses solutions such as local rooming and remodeling, with meetings at Myrtle Hotel banquet room and a sustaining $10 membership to curb further drives. Ben Daniels finishes moving his pioneer shoe repair shop from Brewer's Clothing to the Herald building this week. It will be known as Excel Shoe Repair with Randolph Smith, experienced in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles work, ready to repair and rebuild any shoe from spike heels to logger boots.
Feature notes Senator Goldwater of Arizona as a bold critic of rising government spending and eroding freedoms. It references Bob Taylor of the US Press Association calling Goldwater’s speech “The Biggest Story of the Year” and promotes Human Events distribution of excerpts from Goldwater’s Platform for Free America. Bay Mast of Myrtle Point Union High School and Miss Janet Lane of Powers High School will attend the 28th annual Oregon Retail Distributors Institute conference in Eugene on April 24 and 26. They were selected for interest in retailing and academic achievement and are sponsored by Henry Schroeder, firm manager and third vice president of the institute. A detailed program will be shown at The Herald office. merchants are urged to join the event, which runs from 4:00 p.m. Sunday the 24th to Monday afternoon the 25th.
The Girls League at the high school sponsors an art exhibit by Colonial Art Company featuring 150 reproductions. Show runs April 25 through 29 daily 2 5 pm and 7 9 pm at the old Mercury sales building next to Brodie's on Spruce Street. Admission 15 cents for students and 5 cents for adults. Proceeds fund classroom pictures. Committee chairs are Linda Brown Margaret Rasmussen Marilyn Luttrell and Jackie Fohannon.
McKinley Grange No 582 plans a home cooked dinner in the Coquille Community building on April 24 from 12 30 p m to 1 00 p m. Choice of ham or beef and hot rolls. adults 1 50 and children under 12 75c. Proceeds fund the new Grange hall. Dinner served cafeteria style.
Don Wagoner, manager of Schroeder Bros funeral home in Myrtle Point, was elected president of the Oregon Funeral Directors association at the annual meeting in North Bend last Thursday evening, according to a Herald report.
Craig Edwards, a student at Oregon State College, traveled with his father Irving Edwards during the Easter weekend.
Superintendent Armstrong told Dora area residents the consolidated R-41 district will need about 1 million dollars for 1960-61 operations. Half from property taxes and half from state aid and carryover funds. He noted salary raises to attract and retain teachers, with raises of 500 to 1,000 dollars per year for some districts. He described plans for new music teachers and a May 20 election to elect district officials.
Oregon College of Education in Monmouth selects Myrtle Point freshman Tom Whitaker for a role in The Taming of the Shrew to be performed May 12 13 and 14. Whitaker, a Myrt le Point Union high school graduate, majors in secondary education and is the son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Whitaker of 603 Sth street Myrtle Point.
City council studies proposed 1960 61 budget noting higher costs for a new patrolman a police car planning studies park development and fire reserve funds. Ben Nichols reported on the Regional League of Oregon Cities meeting in Coos Bay April 14. Council grants 60 day permit for a trailer house in an unauthorized zone.
The Republican women of Coos county host a bridge, pin ochle and canasta card party on April 27 at 8 00 p m at Timber Inn Coos. Tickets are 1 00 per person with dessert coffee and many door prizes. Reservations in Myrtle Point via Mrs Sam Dement at 562 by April 25. both men and women invited.
Arlo N Duncan, principal of Myrtle Crest School, will join Hasan Realty for full time after this school year. He will continue duties at the school until year end and work with Hasan Realty on weekends and evenings in the interim.
Myrtle Point kindergarten invites parents to an open house on Friday April 22 from 9 30 to 11 30 a m in the Scout building kindergarten room. The first thirty registrants may choose morning or afternoon classes. For details call Mrs Arthur Wise Mrs Leroy Leep or Mrs Alfred Casper.
Coos County Fair board plans a 244 acre purchase north of the fair grounds to ease crowded livestock barns and 4 H facilities. They offered 500 to Sam Dement for the tract with a projected 1500 for site work and drainage. A budget meeting delegation may seek court approval as an all county project. The group also considered a publicity push with a 1 grant.
Kenneth Dietz and Bob Klein led 43 Etalka residents who protested closing Etalka school and moving 15 pupils to Broadbent. The board will reconsider the order and make a final decision at a future meeting. Broadbent member Bob Thompson warned rescinding would thwart consolidation aims to benefit students. Dietz argued the district would miss music instruction if Etalka closed. Continued on Sack Page.
