Southwestern Oregon High School Choral Festival set for Friday April 29 at 8 pm in North Bend Junior High gym. Participating schools include Myrtle Point Brookings Reedsport North Bend Marshfield Coquille with about 300 singers. Oscar Byorke of Ashland directs the event.

H A Hoyt of Myrtle Point Oregon reports two registered Jersey cows Coralads Dream Darling and Coralads Dream Favorite achieved Cow Power indices of 164 and 154. Darling produced 11 215 pounds of milk and 631 pounds fat in 305 days at age three. Favorite 10 775 pounds milk and 608 pounds fat in 287 days at age three. The American Jersey Cattle Club supports this Cow Power program to boost efficiency in dairying.
A writer recalls seeing many copies claimed to be from Abraham Lincoln era. The piece notes a real Civil War era New York Independent copy brought by Sanford Bay from Sitkum Route Myrtle Point, handed down in the Sanford family through a Civil War veteran. Coos County taxpayers have until May 16 to file petitions with the Board of Equalization for review of assessments. The three member board will meet May 9 in Room 208 of the courthouse to consider reductions. Taxpayers may review assessments with Assessor C. G. Caughell in Room 317 before appealing to the state tax commission if needed.
Voters in district R-41 will elect a successor to Don Driscoll and a three member committee from each zone. Candidates are Ralph Whitaker Kenneth Stevens and Mrs Laverne Noyes. Polls open 2 to 8 pm at Myrtle Crest Myrtle Point Broadbent Bridge Arago Sitkum and Dora schools.
Elks lodge in Coquille Valley announces junior golf privileges allowing non member youths to join with Elks sponsorship. Women’s day lessons begin Wednesday at 10 am with 75 cent fee including clubs and balls. Pro shop opens with new stock and services as course and facilities improved for the coming season.
The Myrtle Point FFA hosted the Rogue Umpqua district tourney with teams from Myrtle Point Grants Pass Marshfield and Minots Valley. Grants Pass beat Illinois Valley 24 16 Myrtle Point beat Coos Bay 31 27 Marshfield beat Illinois Valley 46 44 for third place Myrtle Point beat Giants Pase 44 35 in the final Ross Pecham Giants Pase scored 18 Don Wet Myrtle Point had 13 points trophies awarded to first and second place squads.
Local citizens formed an Executive Committee for Recreation and City Beautification with Mrs Tom Perkins as chairwoman and City Councilman Al Albertson as chairman. The group approved a general executive board list including Henry A Schroeder as general chairman and multiple officers with focus areas from athletics to city beautification. A closed organizing meeting at the kindergarten building on May 2 will appoint active committees drawn from participating organizations. Schroeder invites suggestions from individuals and groups to support coordinated youth recreation and beautification projects.
Public hearing on the 1960 61 budget for the new district R 41 set for May 16 at 8 00 p m in the union high school library. The fourteen member district budget committee includes seven board members and seven at large appointees. Citizens may discuss the budget at the hearing.
Lions club meeting featured a lively Advertising Night with members shouting promotions for real estate, groceries, and more. Lion Jack Sturza received a hearty gift, while Coach Gene Owens announced the annual athletics banquet for May 4 at 7 30 PM with guest speaker Paul Valenti from Oregon State. Ray Whiteside gave a golf briefing affecting juniors and women guests.
Al Shirtcliff and Flash Owens announce the Dol-R-Wise Market grand opening on Thursday through Saturday. A $50,000 addition brings 8500 square feet of space plus free parking for over 150 cars, with glass frontage and expanded departments for meat, grocery, dairy, and produce. Free prizes, coffee, surprises, merchandise, and music will accompany the event.
The Barcen administrator of the Condon reports that liquor revenue for the first quarter of 1980 totaled 3,081,262 dollars. Funds were allocated to state general funds, census, cities, counties, and treasuries under liquor laws. License fees are split 60 percent to cities and counties and 40 percent to the general fund.
Representative R Ore says he is honored to be on James Metta's list of International Teamsters Union members. Metta threatens to defeat him in the most election, pledging to oppose leadership and pressure.
Sheriff Charles Strawn warns Coos county taxpayers that May 15 1960 is the last day to pay the third quarter real and personal property taxes without interest. The tax office closes May 14 and 15 due to a Sunday. payments must be received by Friday May 13 if paid in person, and mailed envelopes must be postmarked by May 15 to avoid interest.
District Commander Ike Daisy and auxiliary president will meet World War I veterans and wives on May 5 1960 at 8 00 pm at Myrtle Point city hall. Regular meeting with refreshments at hotel after the gathering.
