Myrtle Point to Replace Water Transmission Lines

The Myrtle Point city council directed crews to replace about 3000 feet of water transmission lines along Spruce Street Wick Street B Street A Street Bender Street Ash Street and First Street. Work will start when weather permits. The council also tabled a county planning participation request and requested an ordinance on tree planting and subdivision regulations.

Local Students Dominate Regional Science Fair Honors

Myrtle Point High School hosts the regional science fair with 19 exhibits from Myrtle Point and district schools in Southwest Oregon. Senior division silver awards go to Janet Naslund and Lindsay Hauschildt. Bill Brodie earns a merit. Junior division silvers go to Marion Dement Becky Brodie. Reed Gurney Jim Blohm earns a merit. Second-place entries advance to the Northwest Science Fair in Portland May 6. winners announced May 7.

Camp Fire Girls Plan Seventh Craft Fair

The Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds of Coos County announce a Seven Crafts Fair on Friday April 28 from 4 to 530 pm at the IWA hall Coos Bay. Seven Camp Fire crafts will be shown in small booths and a Civil War themed Camp Fire ceremonial will be performed. Tea coffee and punch will be served. Mothers and girls interested in the Camp Fire and Blue Bird program are invited to attend.

Maple Primary School sets an open house for April 25 1961 on Tuesday evening from 6 30 to 8 30 pm. Parents and friends are invited to visit classrooms and view the children's work displayed.

$200 Stop and Shop Draw Promises Big Payout Saturday

A Saturday prize event offered $200 to a present winner at participating stores at 2 PM sharp. Ben Daniels, chair of the Retail Trade Committee, reported at a Chamber of Commerce meeting that a winner would be announced, but no winner was present to claim the prize. Chas Pochlitz announced the May 6 South West Oregon Band Festival in Myrtle Point, with 500 musicians expected and lodging concerns. The Chamber voted to provide refreshments for participants. Leonard Farr spoke on credit as an asset to retailer and customer, detailing systems and benefits. Elton Schroder introduced Farr and chaired questions.

Milk Drink Contest to crown Coos County Dairy Princess

Teenagers 13 through 19 may enter a regional Milk Drink Contest sponsored by area dairy groups and media in Coos Bay. Three $100 scholarships plus grand prizes up to $7500 are planned, with weekly winners serving the drink at media events. A Coos County Dairy Princess contest seeks a 16 to 25 year old entrant with dairy ties and community presence.

Oregon Senate Highway Bond Issue Moves Forward

The Oregon Senate Highway committee approved a $4,000,000 bond for Highway 42 with a 4 to 8 vote and sent it to the floor. Sponsors include Senator Dick Chapman and Senators Yturri and Francis with four in favor. Opponents were Senators Goode Groener and Key. The bill awaits Senate passage and the governor’s signature. no federal matching stipulations remain.

Budget committee approves welfare plan for Coos County

The Coos County United Good Neighbors Budget Committee endorsed a Southern Coos County welfare budget totaling 18,000 with 1,690 for admin costs. The overall fund drive targets 30,406 from agencies, reduced to actual Distribution to Red Cross Arthritus Boy Scouts Camp Fire Girls Girl Scouts and Mental Health allocations. The campaign launches May 1 with two yearly drives, one in Bay area in fall and one in Southern Coos County in spring.
