The Oregon State Legislature Highway Interim committee will meet in Coquille this evening at 6 30 with dinner at 82 per plate at the Community building. After dinner a second meeting at 8 o clock will follow. Rep. Ralph Moore described the session as very important for highways and urged attendance. E C Roberts and a group from here plan to travel, and others without transport were urged to contact Ed or Walt for a ride.
The Myrtle Point Business and Professional Women club won first place in a state contest for stories in weekly newspapers. Their Myrtle Point Herald coverage of the club’s float in the July Fourth parade last year earned the top honor. Results and winning entries were sent to the national office for consideration.
The Myrtle Point Cub Scouts will be officially organized Friday at 7 20 pm in the Junior High school gym. David Putnam district Scout representative from Coos Bay will conduct the event. Boys aged 8 and 10 may join if accompanied by a parent. Mr and Mrs John Sampson lead the local group and urge parents to attend with their sons.
Marvin Bilderbech aged 15 living near Sitkumia was shot in the leg by a gun while boys played near Crosby bridge last Thursday. Casper discharged the weapon causing the accident in which the bullet traveled upward through the knee. State police report the shooting as accidental and Bilderbech is recovering after surgery to remove the bullet.
Orville Knight former city recorder of Powers died at the Veterans hospital in Portland Monday from a heart attack. He leaves a wife and two daughters Naomi and Ramona, with Ramona at home and Naomi in the east. Sister Mrs Mick Perkins of Myrtle Point. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 pm at Schroeder funeral home with Rev Grverson of Bridge officiating. Burial will be in Norway cemetery.
Children gathered Sunday afternoon for a large Easter egg hunt at the fair grounds. Ralph Kring chaired a committee that supervised the event as prizes were awarded to Tiny Tots and 3rd grade competitors, with Diane Dement and Allan Hale among top winners.
Dr A Theodore Smith announces the Myrtle Point interchurchship will hold a fellowship supper at 7 pm in the Methodist church followed by a missionary program at 8 pm Clarence and Lucille Heckman on furlough from Africa will speak and present items on African life and culture with a moving picture.
Myrtle Point B P W members lead a delegation to Bandon for the Emblem Ceremony at the new club’s charter night. A district meeting f eleven B P W clubs from Bandon Coquille Coos Bay Drain Cottage Grove Yoncalla Wil lama Eugene Eugene Springfield and Myrtle Point will be held in Myrtle Point next Sunday with speakers on United Nations and the Philippine affair. Dinner will follow at the Grange hall and Fern Trull will address on B P W in a World of Confusion TM.
Harold Ross mayor of Powers visited Myrtle Point Monday and called at The Herald office to subscribe the newspaper for Orville Knight former Powers city recorder now in a Portland Veterans' hospital.
George Wes announces Curtis Beckham as Athletic and Physical Education Director at Union High School. Beckham shifts from multi sport coaching to track and PE leadership, leaving several coaching duties behind. Dale Bunnell becomes head football coach, Len Rinearson named head basketball coach, both with extra teaching duties, while Myrtle Point teams gain statewide recognition for their record.
The Oregon State Game Commission bulletin declares opening of trout steelhead salmon and Jack salmon season in zones 1 2 and 3 including Coos county on Saturday April 18 and closing Sunday October 15. Daily bag limits and minimum lengths are set with various limits by zone and species across state waters including Coquille River and Columbia River up to St Helens. The Myrtle Point Senior and Junior high bands present a joint concert in the high school auditorium Tuesday evening at 8 o clock. Soloists from both groups perform pieces they will play at the Southwest Oregon contest in Roseburg April 21 and 22. Admission is free with a silver offering to help musicians cover Roseburg trip costs. Gordon Daniels joins the Billsingsley Huggins Insurance office after service in World War II and Portland college study. He is a double cousin of Ben Daniels of the Paul Breuer store.
The Bobcats trip to Roseburg saw Ree Bill Cobb lead with 10 points and a first in the high jump and hurdles. J Krantz Kenny Parry and Gin Compton claimed firsts in javelin broad jump and 220 yard dash while Dick Anderson and Ford Worsham tied for first in pole vault. Other scorers included Forrest Easton Rick Bingham Ralph Clarno Jim Mack Glen Zeller Jim Bushnell and Bill Davenport. They head to Coquille Saturday for the annual Coquille relays.
The Myrtle Point Lions club plans to initiate all Cubs who joined in the past year at the next regular meeting on April 18. George Linn named a committee to arrange for ample raw meat. Frank Schram welcomed new member from Bridge. Melcrum urged support for the cancer society, noting 22,000,000 cancer deaths predicted unless action is taken.
Marshall Dana managing editor of the Portland Oregon Journal has accepted an invitation to deliver the commencement address here on Wednesday evening May 24 He is noted as a leading speaker with European travel in the past two years He will also speak at Coquille high school on May 25. One Little Boy Makes Debut as New Citizen.
Len Rinearson, tall 6 feet 4 inches and mid season replacement, will coach the Bobcats this week. The USC standout has begun duties after Myrtle Point days and will lead the Corvallis team against their rivals.
The Hollenbeck family announces a grand opening in Powers after 30 years in business. Lonnie W. Hollenbeck and son Claud have rebuilt in a new building with expanded stock including tires tubes batteries and 1950 electric appliances plus Shell products. They offer 24 to 48 hour service and previously ran the Shell station in Coquille.
Myrtle Point Odd Fellows lodge expects to relocate from the old quarters to the new lodge building this week as the auditorium nears completion. Secretary C P Moore believes the move will occur next Sunday with all members present to assist. Upon completion the lodge will boast one of Southern Oregon’s finest quarters.
