A terse land description notes Clondike section 23 on the north bank of a creek about 15 miles south of Poe. The lines reference a rural survey context with limited positional detail. No dates or additional names are provided.
William Hamilton Bunch known as Sam died April 7 at his niece Elsie Tillman’s Gaston home. Born January 16 1853 in Polk County Missouri he moved with his parents to Oregon then Coos County. He served 18 years as Coquille County school superintendent and later farmed at McKinley then Jacksonville and Myrtle Point. He is survived by seven children including Rev Taylor Bunch and Dr Claude C Bunch plus four sisters and one brother and seven grandchildren. Funeral held April 10 in Dora with Reverend Steunemberg officiating. Interment Dora cemetery beside his wife.
Mra Fred Lafferty presents Twin Oaks pupils in a pre Easter recital on Friday April 15 at 1 309 of the schoolhouse. The program includes three groups of music from county festival pieces popular songs and Easter songs. Pupils include Amy Marie Davenport Evelyn Billings Verne Hunt Donald Davenport Harold Reed Marjorie Van Orden Iris Horschauer and Colleen Sullivan. An Easter egg hunt follows for children in the community.
State examiner of operators and chauffeurs Ward McReynolds will be at Myrtle Point City Hall next Thursday April 21 from 10 am to 5 pm. Those seeking permits or licenses to drive cars should contact McReynolds during the visit.
The Myrtle Leaf club held an all day meeting and a noon potluck at the gym on April 7 with hostess Mrs. Minor Mead. March birthday honorees received handkerchief showers, five Mesdames Alford and Laird siblings joined as new members, and a club contest entertained attendees.
Jacob Nelson 75 died after two days illness from heart trouble. He was born February 28 1863 in Keokuk Iowa lived in Casper Wyoming and Myrtle Point Oregon serving as plumber water superintendent night marshal and city councilman. Survived by wife and three children sister and brother. funeral held at Presbyterian Church with Rev Mitchem.
The Woman's club hosted a tea at the Presbyterian church to honor Mrs A C Mc Intyre, president of the Oregon Federation of Women's clubs. She received a corsage, spoke on club work, and was introduced by Mrs Verne Lundy. Mrs Ellis Dement sang. social hour followed with tea poured by Mrs Austin Dodge and Mrs T G Sumerlin.
Coos County Real Estate association board members gathered in Coquille last week to discuss the organization’s constitution and by laws. The meeting centered on governance and future plans as members from the association convened at the town venue.
Harry Beall and A. (Am) Wilson of The Dalles become owners of the Ira Wilson Service Station and Repair Shop at Spruce and Eighth streets. They lease from Wilson’s oil company, expand the lot to Eighth and Maple, and keep existing staff Waldo Brown Hattie Cooper and Ira Wilson to ensure efficient service. Ira Wilson, active in autos since 1890, continues in the business.
Fishing season begins Friday April 18 and runs to October 31 1838 with daily hours from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. General open season sets trout size at six inches minimum and bag limits of 20 fish or 18 pounds plus one fish per day. seven day limit 40 fish or 30 pounds plus one fish. Licenses cost 3 dollars, combo hunting fishing license 35 dollars. juvenile licenses 1 dollar. vacation license 1 dollar for two days. Unlawful practices listed include multiple lines, more than two spinner blades, more than three hooks on one line, selling fish without permit, fishing without license, near fishways, waste, fishing on private lands without permission, and other enforcement rules.
Miss Margaret Chase of Myrtle Point daughter of Mr and Mrs A C Chase joined the newly formed Sigma Omega Chi sociology honorary as a charter member on April 12.
Boy Scouts of Myrtle Point and Bridge held a court of honor at Myrtle Point Junior High School auditorium. Judges included John Dunckley John Huff and Scoutmaster Max Garrett. Earned tenderfoot badges were Barton Christy Eugene McCracken Phillip Linn William Sempert and Jome Hanna. Four Star Scouts Forrest LaFlamme Lyle Olson Glen Olson and Robert Peel. Bridge Scouts passing second class tests were Marvin Fluff Byron Van Aistein William Huff Charles Holmes and Robert Dunckley.
The 1996 Oregon State Fair premium list offers about $28 000 in premiums across many departments. The 80 page publication has a gray cover with red design. Prospective exhibitors may request copies from the Oregon State Fair Agricultural Building in Salem.
The Townsend club met at Townsend hall on Sunday April 10 with president H. M. MacLean. Baker visited Portland and Eugene discussing matters with Gordon Ware. A bystander pickpocketed Baker while helping him aboard a streetcar. New members Mrs. C. Smith and Sam Stout joined Myrtle Point. A public chicken and noodle dinner is planned under Myrtle Point Townsend club auspices. Next Sunday program day starts at 2 pm inviting public attendance.
The VFW Auxiliary met in the VFW hall Friday afternoon and elected officers for the 1938 1939 term. Marriage licenses issued include C Parrott of Camas Valley and Derthe Marshall of Silverton on April 6 by Rev Jia Saat at the Hotel Chandler Marshfield. Louis Farmer of Bridge and Vic Walter of Marshfield received licenses April 6 and 13 respectively. Vernon J Smith of North Bend and Jessie Lawhorn of McKinley, Phillip Fourier and Alberts Louise Yarbrough of Marshfield also granted licenses April 13. all expected to wed over Easter weekend.
Willie Edwin Freeman, 36, sparked a commotion outside the Hi Lead Club Monday night over a guitar tossed from a car near the Methodist church. Freeman caused damage, was jailed then transferred to county custody for observation and a potential sanity test. He once worked at End garage and lived in Sitkum. origin Nebraska.
Mrs. Harry Christy and Mrs. Paul Breuer held a surprise bridal shower for Miss Hildred Redell at the Presbyterian church social room Wednesday evening. Miss Redell will wed Ellis Button Sunday afternoon. About 40 guests attended as games and pantry-item contests provided merriment.
Stanley Phillipe left Monday night for Canada after a long distance call from his wife and their 10 year old daughter Earia who is gravely ill. He will stop in Portland to arrange a plane to fly his daughter for medical care. Mrs Phillips and her daughter reached a remote spot beyond Regina with no nearby railroad or highway access. A doctor attended the child after arrival on Saturday night.
High school students statewide compete to win prizes offered by Postmaster FE. T. Mediuad. Top prize includes meals for five days if the winner lives west of the Mississippi. Second prize is a trophy and third prize a plaque.
The Coos County Fair board met at the Hotel Coos Bay North Bend with nine of eleven members present. Ellis Dement was reelected president A H Powers named vice president L H Pearce treasurer. Browning Carnival Amusement Co and Eddie Burke Amusement Co contracted for fair entertainment. Fair dates set for September 14 15 16 17 1938. Next meeting to be held in Bandon May 10.
