Serial Levy Proposed for $72,000 Fire Facility Upgrade

Voters face a Tuesday April 16 election on a 10 year serial levy to raise 72000 for a new fire station at 4th and Maple and two fire trucks. If approved construction of a three bay station begins this summer and a truck is bought now with another in five years. Hours 8 am to 8 pm. Finance committee says upgrading Myrtle Point Volunteer Fire Department housing and equipment is the most economical path to lower future insurance rates.

Naslund buys Harris Plumbing, forming Valley Plumbing and Heating to offer heating and service. Ray Harris announces Portland link. Naslund states James Brown will remain as plumber. Naslund is a Union Oil distributor for Myrtle Point.

Assembly Of God Easter Services and Revival Closings

The Assembly of God Church schedules Easter services at 11 am with Rev. Rich ard Munson speaking on Our Hope. A two week revival ends at 7 pm with Evangelist Bobby Boreland. A music service in Coquille features Olson Bros quartet and Travelers quartet from Sacramento Saturday evening.

The First Christian church invites worshipers to a Good Friday candlelight communion at 7 pm. Easter Sunday service is scheduled for 11 am with a morning worship.

Presbyterians Plan Easter Week Services

Presbyterians map Holy Week services at the church including Maundy Thursday communion. Easter Sunday features a 9:45 a.m. Sunday school program built around a colored film and a 1 p.m. worship hour for the church dedication and new member reception.

Community Good Friday Service Slated at First Christian Church

A three hour Good Friday community service will run from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at First Christian church with six speakers delivering ten-minute talks on the last words of Jesus. Speakers include Rev Lon Tetrick, Rev Herbert Baker, Rev Lloyd Pounds, Rev John Wood, Rev Glen Mayhew, Rev Ben Elliot, and Rev Frost Hatch.

The Myrtle Point district approves its school budget as residents head to the polls in the race for two open school board seats. Candidates include local educators challenging incumbents in the district ballot.

Lions Easter Egg Hunt Plans Announced for Easter

The annual Lions egg hunt will be Easter Sunday at 1 p m in the Rotary Park announced by Roy Robincot club president Floyd Bridgham is event chairman. The event invites all community members with hundreds of colored eggs and prizes including large Easter baskets. Three age groups pre schoolers to nine years nine to twelve compete for prizes. More than 200 attended last year.

Rotary Elects Melvin Zumwalt President

Rotary announces Melvin Zumwalt will assume office as president in July after unanimous selection by this year’s nominating committee. The slate includes Wayne Babcock as vice president Bill Winningham and Les Simons as officers with Dean Mason reelected secretary treasurer and Bob Hogan reelected sergeant at arms for another year.

Boys Injured In Accident Involving Scooter and Auto

Dan Woolley age 16 and Raymond Daniels age 18 were injured when a Honda scooter driven by Dan collided with a car driven by Curt Beckham. Police arrived within seconds and stated the scooter was apparently at fault.

Kindergarten registration event for 5-year-olds in district

Parents of children who will be five before November 15 may register for kindergarten. An open session for seeing classes in action will be Friday April 19 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Myrtle Point Kindergarten 905 Railroad. All district 41 kindergarten students are eligible to register.

Bud Meek and Milt Roth led the Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club round robin tourney Sunday. They finished with 36 points in the final round and 66 total to top the field. Team No 12 Damon Minto and Quintin Hill also posted a score.

Clarence Newell dies in Myrtle Point after heart attack

Clarence Newell died Sunday in Myrtle Point after a heart attack. He owned and operated a business there with his wife Rebessa before moving three years ago. he was born November 5, 1906, in Sheridan Wyoming and was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows lodge in Myrtle Point.
