The city completed a trial of the new water system last week. Firefighters demonstrated pressure by reaching the top of buildings in the business district. They also sprayed Spruce Street dust from mains, which mixed oil and tar odors. The reservoir can be kept full, unlike years past when wooden mains limited storage.
The Coos county socialist convention at Coquille last Monday announced candidates: representative M. Breuer of Bandon. joint rep C F Gilroy of Bridge. sheriff John Hayden of Marshfield. county judge J E Quick of Coquille. county clerk F F Wood. county treasurer J H James of Coquille. county surveyor L B Martin. county coroner Wm Huntley of Myrtle Point. county commissioner W A Gilmore of Marshfield.
E E Weekly completes 14 mile contract from King Creek to Endicott with a 16 foot bed and 12 inch rock gravel layer. The route toward an all year highway to Roseburg earns praise for thoroughness and quality as material settles.
R J Garrett father of Roy and Fred Garrett and several daughters died at his home south of Myrtle Point after a long illness. Funeral to be held at the Presbyterian church with Rev G W Taylor in charge. Interment in Norway Cemetery. He was of advanced age and valued by many friends. An obituary is expected next week.
Members from all county lodges gathered in Coquille for the annual Eastern Star meeting celebrating founder Robert Morris. Mrs. Mabel Roberts was elected county president with A. W. Myers as vice president and Mrs. Daisy Short as secretary. Mrs. L. Strong delivered the welcome. The next annual celebration will be held in Coquille.
L Wimberly publisher of the Roseburg Review paid the Enterprise a fraternal visit last Saturday and spoke briefly. He is grand chief patriarch of the Encampment branch of Odd Fellowship and traveled with Judge Ryan grand master on an official visit. They met local members of the orders Saturday evening.
Hood River fruit growers secure a historic sale of fancy apples to Steinhardt and Kelly of New York. About 250000 to 300000 boxes are sold, equaling roughly 400 carloads and a near half million dollar transportation value.
The small schooner Randolph built by Herman Bros of Randolph for John Anderson was launched last week. The vessel will haul freight to Rogue River Port Orford and other coastal points and may serve as a fish boat and for sea lion hunting.
A. O. Hooten of Bridge Oregon sent spring water for analysis. The Corvallis laboratory reports 246 parts per million of dissolved salts, chiefly carbonates and sulfates of calcium magnesium and sodium, with magnesia as the major component.

B D Jones an early resident died Friday morning at Mercy hospital at age 74. Born in Wales he came to the United States as a young man. He worked in Newport and Southport coal mines, later moved to Empire where he lived until illness. Funeral Sunday from his Empire home with services by Archdeacon Horsfall of the Episcopal church, under Arago Lodge I O F Marshfield News.
Portland reports the strongest August in its history with broad prosperity across the Pacific Northwest. The city credits solid returns from soil river mines and forests in the tributary region, while Portland serves as the trade hub for these products and reflects the producer’s wealth.
Roy Perkins, an aged clam digger, has not been seen for about a week. Officers suspect foul play and have arrested Fred Garrison, a former coworker who had prior disputes with Perkins. Blood stains found in the ferry waiting room and scattered shell of evidence point to a killing and dumping of Perkins’s body in the bay as investigators search the bay for remains.
