The Umpqua Bridge near Umpqua post office 16 miles from Roseburg broke apart Thursday afternoon August 24 1911 as ten men worked on repairs. Five died and five were injured with authorities citing a defective timber in the top chord as the likely cause.

Mrs J C Hervey dies at home near Lee on North Fork at 9 am Wednesday August 30 1911 aged 52 after 15 years of palsy. She came to Coos county in 1872 settling near Rural. Survived by husband three sons five daughters and many siblings. Funeral at 11 am Thursday conducted by Rev Thomas Barklow with interment at Norway cemetery.

Mrs. Maria Hopkins Border mother of Mrs. L W Traver and A D Border of Marshfield died this morning after a long illness at her daughter's home. Born in London on August 26 1873 she came to Maryland as a child and later to the Coquille valley. Funeral services were held at the Marshfield Methodist church and the body will be taken to Myrtle Point for burial. Rev Stofield officiated.
