Post Office urges thorough packing and labeling for parcel post as holiday mail rises. Postmaster Steward outlines rules including sender name on each package, secure attachment for umbrellas and canes, and use of sturdy boxes with absorbent material for perishables.
Buildings connected to the main heating plant include Waldo Hall Agricultural Hall Gymnasium and Dairy. When the new steam boiler is installed the system will extend to all other heated buildings and the supplementary plant will be discontinued. The old plant has served about fifteen years vs typical eight to ten years.
The second largest log ever from Seven Mile camp was hauled to the river last week. The spruce log measured 5% feet at the small end and was noted as a remarkable timber harvest for the season.
Dr. Hector Macpherson, Oregon member of the American Commission evaluating rural organizations in Europe, says 28 of 64 delegates are farmers only a few as full-time professions. He notes agriculture is underrepresented and criticizes the commission’s formation before studying European bodies. He will discuss findings during Farmers' Week at Oregon Agricultural College December 8 to 18.
Geo. W. Stewart shifts his livery and feed business from the Machado barn on Spruce street to the Bing er Hermann barn at Maple near the depot. Geo. Martin will operate a private hack between here and Roseburg in connection with the move.
The Merced lies wrecked on rocks at Point Conception as Captain Olson and crew inspect. Miss Ada Smith, aboard the ship, plays the piano found amid the debris, unhurt, while Adeline and Nana Smith ships prepare for salvage and coastal voyages after the incident.
A revised timetable on the Coos Bay Roseburg and Eastern Railroad line between this place and Marshfield took effect last Monday. The morning train now reaches Beaver Hill on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays instead of Mondays and Thursdays. On Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays the arrival is 9 50 a m and departure 10 10 a m. on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays arrival is 10 30 a m and departure 10 45 a m. The afternoon train remains unchanged with arrivals at 3 42 p m and departures at 4 05 p m.
Women voters aided the wet side in Redondo Beach where the initiative to abolish saloons failed 829 to 634. Mayor L A Roberts and family returned from a three week trip, attending the Oregon state fair in Salem and Grand Lodge meetings in Portland.
Grandma Todd aged 103, a Lane county icon and Pacific coast among oldest, registered in Eugene last week along with others. Webster Kincaid reports the event.
A court house outing in a private automobile with Mrs Todd highlights her likely status as the state's oldest prospective voter in the upcoming election. The guard notes her advanced age and fluent conversation on current topics, while doubting many peers will reach the polls.
At a mid month meeting the council heard a petition from 193 W C T U members seeking an ordinance to close motion picture houses on Sunday. A remonstrance with 157 signatures opposed the ordinance. The council deferred action pending City Attorney Pulford’s full review and possible briefs.
Edward W. White assistant superintendent of the Supreme Lodge Knights of Pythias Portland visits Coos county lodges to interest more members in the insurance feature and boost participation.
Seattle reports a new two townships wide coal field in Coos county Oregon near Isthmus Inlet Eden Ridge south of the city. Government field agents confirm thick seven to twelve foot seams of high grade bituminous coking coal surrounded by timber. C A Smith Lumber plans a railroad to access the district and claimants expect patents soon with diamond drills planned to mine amid heavy timber and brush.
Mrs Mary E Dietz widow of Chas E G Dietz died at her home after about three weeks illness. She was 66 years old. Born April 30 1847 in Boston Massachusetts she moved to California and later to Oregon. Eight children survived. infant Jane E died. Funeral today at 2 00 p m at Latter Day Saints church led by Elder C E Crumley. Frank Morse visited from Coquille.
