Adeline Smith 310-Foot Lumber Steamer for C A Smith Co

The Adeline Smith a 310 foot lumber steamer under construction at Newport News Va for the C A Smith company will soon sail around the Horn and operate between Coos Bay and Oakland carrying lumber and steel rails. It will use one mast for wireless and electric crane loading with no winches. Captain B W Olson will command the Nan Smith around the Horn and then become master of the Adeline Smith. Captain William Magee becomes master of the Nan Smith and Erickson of the Nan Smith becomes captain of the Redondo.

County Clerk Watson completes the official count for the November 6 election in Coos County. Our detailed results show Taft, Wilson, Debs and Roosevelt among presidential totals and race by race tallies for congress, U S senator, state offices, judges, and amendments with party breakouts and local commissioners counts. Hugh McLain led the Wilson electors in Coos County with 1 154 votes.

A note found with a book read The struggle under the competitive system is not worth the effort let it pass. Friends say his suicide followed his wife’s death in an auto accident a year ago and his melancholy since. He was to face federal court in Ft Scott on defamation charges tied to the paper.

Railroad worker narrowly avoids serious injury

William Howells, an employer on the railroad construction crew, narrowly escaped serious harm Monday when a tie dropped from a worker’s hands and struck him in the back. The shock paralyzed his lower body but he is reported to be improving at White Grass Hospital.
